Geared washarm support removal GE GSD2800

I want to remove this from the tub so I can clean. When I received the machine this component didn't turn at all (although washarm itself does turn on its orbital axis). When I pulled the motor/pump off, I managed to loosen this part from the underside...and now I can turn fairly freely in either direction it when I grasp it by the geared edge.

Here's what I need to know:

1) Is it supposed to turn when the machine is running or be tightly affixed to tub bottom? Has is just been locked tight to the tub by mineral deposits?

2) How do I fully remove it without damaging it?

From memory you should be able to unscrew the base. Just grab and turn it. Underneath that cuff, on which the sprocket runs when the washarm rotates, there is a small hole on the right. It should seal with a black rubber plug that sits on the inside and closes the hole shut when the machine is pumping water up into the washarm and tower. This little plug disintegrated in my machine, thus causing a drop in water pressure, which reduced the cleaning performance for the upper basket. To have it replaced took almost three months. The item could not be sourced from anywhere in Australia at that time. I had to ask a relative in the States to source and post it.

Whilst I liked my GE 2800 very much, I felt that the black rubber seals were of lower quality. They disintegrated after only a few years. In the end, and before the fan detached from the motor shaft, the door seals had also started to fail and water was leaking out at the front during operation.

The part that is shown in your picture should be static during operation. There are no moving parts. The little sprocket that is on the underside of the washarm and tower assembly runs around that serrated cuff or edge. [this post was last edited: 9/13/2014-11:09]

As Olav stated the geared collar does not move. It is screwed on. Sometimes they are a bear to get off. Unless there is a leak, I can't see much reason to remove the upper collar or lower coupling to which it is screwed it. There is a danger of damage trying to remove the collar. I have has some that turn easily by hand, and I was able to unscrew it from the top while the coupling was still connected to the pump. But oftentimes calcium and other deposits make separation quite difficult at best.

If there is no leakage, I would just wipe the geared top of the collar clean and reassemble.

You said the motor/pump on your 2800 sounded "ratty". One thing to keep in mind is that there is a floating ring in the pump and when the pump is on, with no water, it will give you a sort of rattling sound. This is most likely what you were hearing. When it is pumping water, in normal operation, this is not a sound you will hear. The motor/pumps were not designed to be run dry.

In a few cases, I have seen the wire spring "blade" in the soft food disposer break off or come off the shaft. This could also make a rattling sound as well.
