Found this one downstairs today. Looks to be a TOL model. Water still in hoses, no rust. Other than being filthy (when are they not?) seems to be in nice shape. I've read these models can be problematic, so we'll see what happens when I hook it up. May take me awhile to repair if needed. Begun work on the Caloric again.

GE Plastic Tub Washer

Well it has diffidently been in sunlight judging by the yellowed knobs. These were very good performers overall but had numerous durability issues. Overall they were certainly superior to a MT DC washer in all performance aspects EXCEPT durability.

 

It is very easy to pop the front panel off Louie, you might want to peak inside  you might not want to even leave it in the house overnight when you see inside, some of these GEs were an amazing mess of rust, corrosion and leaked oil inside, I have opened up many of these and commended them in less than 30 seconds.

I saw a video on how to open up this washer. Amazingly easy to take apart. Nothing like the Frigidaire.  We'll see in a bit what lies within.

Damn it! A leak!

 

 

 

It started fine, but once the water reached the bottom of the pressure switch it began to leak like a sieve. I quickly put it in spin and pumped the remaining water out.

 



 

It seems like an easy fix. Judging from the lack of rust, this is a very recent issue. Perhaps this is why it was discarded.

Well, it's spewing oil. Just small specs here and there, but it's definitely leaking. Sigh.

Apparently it was dropped on it's side, the water pressure valve hit the inner wall, shattering a small section of the outer tub. I've decided to tear it down and if I find a used outer tub, I'll replace it. The only value this machine has to me is a teaching aid. If I ever get it running again, I'll just give it away (with full disclosure of course).

What did you wind up doing with the Frigidaire machine? Can you please take a picture of your kitchen for me? A couple shots especially washer sink etc..... Brings back memories of growing up in the Bronx.

Spittin image to my GE

that got replaced. Gave me 14 years of service which is probably 10 years longer than GE designed it for.

It did wash well albeit somewhat noisily. Not one problem until the tub seal gave up the ghost, taking the steel drive tranny with it.

Glad to see you took in another orphaned washer, Louie. Always enjoy your play-by-play photos of these fixer-uppers. How cool that the console-protecting film hadn't been peeled away. It gleams like new, now.

I was going to suggest using a sealant, preferably an epoxy type, to seal the crack....and you should be good to go.....

also, make sure the epoxy is for plastics......used for plastic pipes and polypropylene type plastics......

I was just about to say that

it's probably spewing oil!  My sister's did that.  Simple enough to change out the transmission, got one new and cheap on ebay.  I found her a slightly used Maytag orbital and sold her old GE for my cost, just for the experience of playing with it!

The G.E. is no more...

 

 

After giving in a detailed looking I decided it was bot worth repairing. The plastic outer tub was too far gone, and the tranny was leaking. I couldn't give it away in good conscious. So off it went to do laundry in the sky. Keeping things spic n span beyond the pearly gates. 

But something else showed up. Stay tuned.
