German words on my Grundig

While I love my little Grundig hi-fi, the German on it leaves me flustered.

For instance, there is a control dial that is "stereo" on one end (I get that part) but the other end is "Dirigent". I looked that up on the translator, and it is supposed to mean "conductor". Any thoughts about this?

And then there is the "Sendereinstellung Ferrit - Antenne", which I guess is some sort of antenna? It has two choices: Aus (off) and "ein" (I think) which must mean "on"

Does anyone know what one would use a Sendereinstellung Ferrit - Antenne for?

"Adjustment for Reception-Ferrite Antenna"

It is for an auxiliary antenna that you attach, that goes above and beyond what the radio's regular antenna can do (for mountain areas, etc.)

Is yours an Austrian-built model, as is mine?

It says on the back that it is from West Germany, but that might just mean it's a west German company. Is there any other place to look?

Also, any ideas on that stereo/conductor dial? It's attached to the lautstarke (volume) control.

the only german stereo word I know is plattenspieler = turntable or record player

ferrite has something to do with iron. So it's probably just part of old language makeup of the name for an antenna type. ie in french: chemin de fer = railway, the iron road.

I THINK dirigent is like monaural, but I always thought of the little ring as "balance"....mine never changed much...

Yes, if it says West Germany, it's made there as well.

Very good sound quality and beautiful cabinets. I've always had one over the years....

Grundig

Grundig (spoken: Groondig) was once one of the best brands in Germany until the company was wrecked down by share-holders and managers after having been switched from a family-owned enterprise into an incorporated company a few years ago...

Dirigent is normally the conductor of an orchestra...
and Ferritantenne is the antenna for the short-wave, long-wave and medium-wave frequency reception as it has an iron core (Latin = ferrum).

The switch allows to to turn off the built in ferrite antenna if you want to use an outside antenna.
