Dave, these mid-50s Mobile Maids were almost identical to their built-in counterparts - fixed racks, bakelite impellers, and a porcelain wash tub. The inside would be just like the dishwasher in my Wonder Kitchen.  The big difference was cycling  - if you forgot a dish, tough... you had to manually do the equivalent of cancel/drain then restart the wash cycle at the very beginning. Also, the dry cycle is short - about 5 minutes of calrod-warmed air circulated by the impeller. I can't recall if the lid pops or not though....

I had one of these back in college. Think I paid about $10 for it around 1970. It seemed incredibly ancient then, but did a remarkably good job. The lower rack held 20 plates, fewer than the 24 of earlier machines. Maybe this allowed better water circulation. The cycle was rrwrr, with a short dry as turquiosedude noted. Only about 20 minutes, hardly time to find a forgotten dish. The lid did pop open.
The top rack was a great improvement over earlier models which required removal of the center section for glassware to load the bottom. This was easy with only the silverware basket removed.
I think it only used about 6 gallons or so. We had no complaints. Sometimes wish I had it now.
 
Westinghouse

I had one like the Westinghouse, got it for $15 in Berkeley in 1969. It had a leak that I tried to fix a few times and eventually did, I think it was a hose clamp. I tried to add extra detergent for the second wash which was inconvenient. If I had it now I would just use one dose of detergent or a tab and be done. Sure got the dishes clean and was very powerful with that fan as a water circulator.
