Of course nothing to do with appliances, but does anyone here suffer from Glaucoma? I just was diagnosed the other day with an early stage of it- just one eyedrop in each eye before bed. Well, I'm also diabetic.

Glaucoma

Hi Jerry
I dont have it but my mother and some friends of mine have it. They use the drops and are doing well. I would have a big problem if I had it because I hate putting things in my eyes. To me going to the eye dr is worse than the dentist. I rather have root canel than a eye exam. I know it sounds crazy but thats just me. I have to go to the eye dr soon I'm due for a exam but need to get the guts to do it.
Good luck - I'm sure it will work out fine.

I've been on the edge of it for the past few years. First a test will show borderline high pressure, then a few months later it will be well below that. And so on. My mother and one sister have glaucoma, but I can never recall what kind of glaucoma they have when the ophthalmologist asks me.

If I do get a positive diagnosis one day, I will probably request a second opinion.

Well, there were 2 tests- the first one was the pressure one with the blue light, where they put it up against your eye, and the reading was higher. The second test was a few weeks later and was an optical scan, and it came out positive. We'll see. I did have an Aunt who had it for years- and a cousin who's borderline.

I used to wear contacts, so you get used to putting things in and out of your eyes---forget the root canal though, Not my thing!

For over 25 years I have been alarming eye doctors with my optical scan results. They always present what appears to be a classic case of Gluacoma, yet when they do further checking, they all have said the same thing: I don't have it. It just looks like I have it.

Since my mom had Macular Degeneration and her mom had it too, that's what I'm concerned about. Apparently it isn't as common in males, but I remain vigilant.

My wife was diagnosed with glaucoma 15yrs ago, and has been using eyedrops ever since. She just recently had to have the prescription in her glasses reduced, and she is also diabetic. She also has a family history of it on her dad's side of the family. So it's not the end of the world.

Congenital Glaucoma

I was born with this rare form, as no other family members had it. I am not diabetic, but eventually had both eyeballs removed at last resort due to the fact that I could not see out of either of them. Also, the pain was so great that I was not going to spend the rest of my life popping pills and taking eyedrops. Besides, I have been totally blind long before the eye surgeries. So no sudden adjustments to that. I did have my first eye surgeries at six months old to relieve pressure, but these were only a temporary fix to delay the onset of the disease. Fear not, as any form of glaucoma need not end this way, especially with advances in medicine.--Laundry Shark
