So far my gluten free diet experiment is going well. My digestion has improved considerably. I'd like to say all my aches and pains are gone too, but that may take a while ;-).

For years I thought the problem was lactose intolerance. So I've been avoiding milk for that reason. Well, yesterday I decided to test that theory and got a full gallon of the stuff. Had it with cereal last night and again this morning (new gluten-free Corn Chex). No problems. Since my background is nearly 100% European it makes sense that I'm not lactose intolerant.

Eventually I'm going to ask my doctor for a blood test for gluten intolerance (there is one). All I'll have to do, apparently, is eat about four pieces of wheat bread before hand for the test to detect a problem. But for now, since there is no real treatment other than changing diet, I'm in no hurry to have my suspicions confirmed by science.

I'm pleased that things have improved since you went gluten free. As I mentioned, your digestion would improve considerably...mine certainly did.

It could be good to get a diagnosis though. Being intollerant of gluten is one thing, but it can have consequences for other more major diseases such as bowel cancer with those that have problems (and have had problems) more prone to getting it....

...same with gut ulsers...

gut ulcers...

Do you mean stomach ulcers?

A few years back the major cause (2/3) was found... a bacteria, Helicobacter pylori, that thrived in the high acid environment of the stomach. Once the proper antibiotic was found, the incidence of stomach ulcers was greatly reduced.

When one thinks of all the other treatments that the medical profession had for stomach ulcers until then - antacids, special diets, cutting out drinking, lower stress, etc..., none of which really worked because they didn't address the cause.

Coeliacs and Chrones diseases can have lasting effects on the gut...being from the stomach to the intestines inclusive.

It is wonderfull that you are feeling better than you were, but I do think being correctly diagnosed and your GP being aware is worthwhile....

Gluten Free Products

I know we all do not care for Wal Mart but during my lunch break today had to go there. Our store is being redone so lots of things are moved or missing. I di see that in the grocery section on the Flour and Sugar section there are not 3 shelf sections with all gluten free flou to cookies to boxed meals to even gluten free pasta products. Also they are now carrying the Xanthan Gum. This is used for thickening sauces and such wthout having to use Flour, Corn starch for thickeners.

Our local Walmart doesn't appear to have such a gluten free area... but it does carry gluten free soy sauce. I'll have to check it again some time to see if the gf pasta etc is there. Noodles are something I really miss on a gf diet.
