I'm pushing 50 years old and I never remember such a grand funk in our country. I knew Bush/Cheney would be an unprecedented catastrophe for America, and so they were. They've left us demoralized and socialized. The wealthiest nation the world has ever seen, converted in just eight years into a nation of helpless, debt-drowned victims with hands outstretched for government help.
It's great to hear President Obama talk about personal responsibility, but the reality is, Democrat and Republican are simply the two wings of the Corporate Party. As long as we continue to embrace globalization, as long as China and a few other nations continue to play by a different set of rules than everyone else, things will continue to get worse. How is any country supposed to compete with $2/hour labor, with companies who pay no benefits to their employees and have no responsibility whatsoever to their environments? The simple truth is, no one can compete.
Democrats will seek to close some of these gaps, e.g. by changing our corporate tax code to make it less profitable for U.S. companies to export our jobs, but I think it's going to be too little too late. AIG gets bailed out, the rest of us will be subject to "market forces". It's socialism for the rich and capitalism for everyone else.
