Hey everyone! Hope the day finds you well. As you will no doubt already know by the title of the thread, our modern (~15 y.o.) Krupps toaster finally broke down again, and not wanting to have to painstakingly glue the over complicated lowering mechanism back together, it went bye bye. (It had been fixed several times before, and was slow, inconsistent, and only two of the four slots worked, so it was ready to go.). Figuring that any big-box store toaster would be just as bad if not worse, I started researching commercial grade toasters. Most of what I found looked well-made, but contained some sort of circuit board, which I was leery of. Then, I remembered a thread of mine from about a year ago when I posted about my then recently-aquired Sunbeam T9. Someone on that thread mentioned that they had bought a used Dualit on eBay, and had been using it exclusively for over 10 years with no issues whatsoever. Once I looked into the company, I was impressed with what I saw: no electronics to go wrong, no complex cantelivered lowering mechanism to shatter, hand built in Britain, and excellent parts availability and serviceability. The only downside seems to be the price. At first, my family didn’t want to spend that much, but once I pitched it to them as the last toaster they would ever have to buy, they came around. Considering the $100 price difference between the two and four slice models, we went with the two slice model (model D2VMHA), as my vintage sunbeam T9 can fill in for the other two slots if need be. I unboxed it yesterday, but didn’t get to use it until today. It is even more impressive in person. Just looking in through the vents you can see that it uses proper wires, not just cheap metal bars. It also uses proper terminal connectors as opposed to fixed solder joints. Using it is a real joy. It toasts evenly, fast, and the manual raise and lower mechanism is a nice feature. Another point of interest is that it tells you the name of who built it (shoutout to Robert for this particular unit). The pictures are pretty blurry, but hopefully you can get the idea. A big thanks to ea56 for putting Dualit on my radar!
