I was trying to view:

www.info-pg.com

for detergent ingredients.

Fat chance! Chrome for some unfathomable reason, steadfastly refuses to load the page properly, leaving most of the functionality lost in the ether.

Most times, the "Search" button is missing. Once, it partly materialised - but it was still unusable - because the drop-down box for local language selection was inoperative. History, cache and all the rest, was deleted, Chrome terminated and restarted, etc.

Does anyone else have this problem?

Chrome has recently gone through a few updates by Google pushing them. Currently on Version "32.0.1700.107 m".

Why Chrome Anyway?

I know it's a very good browser, but it's a Google product, which means it's probably reporting on you constantly. Why not just send Google your fingerprints and a DNA sample and be done with it?

I'm a Firefox user, with Opera as a backup if I come across a Website that makes Firefox balk for some reason, which it hardly ever does. I'm pretty happy.

Ta.

I used to use Firefox a couple of years ago, but had compatibility issues with it. Then I switched to Chrome.

Now that Chrome has goofed yet again: most recently, they changed drop-down menu-box selection and got rid of the "Up & Down" arrows, making touchpad navigation extremely difficult. PDFs also take an age to render. New Tabs don't open first time any more.

As a test, Internet Explorer 11 seems to work on the P&G info site perfectly well.

I think I'll switch back to Firefox. Chrome is useless and not fit for purpose.

I just tried Firefox, which initially flagged up an out-of-date Adobe Flash error. After updating Adobe, and rebooting Firefox, it still won't open the P&G site, stating that the data communication was terminated.

Internet Explorer seems to be the most consistent, opening it every time.

Last year I was having a time with IE so I switched to Chrome and it was working pretty good up until about this past month and glitches are becoming more commonplace.. I could open the link you posted above.

Did you try clearing your cache up in the right hand corner.. the 3 bars.. then tools, then "clear browsing data" . Worth a shot for what little I know but that helped me on one website I was having issues with.

How odd! I've been having Google Chrome weirdness lately also. There are times when it balks at displaying some of the forums here to the point that I have to quit it and restart it. Sounds like it's time for this ex-IT dude to do his homework and install FireFox... LOL

Cleared cache, licences, history, etc.

Yes, I did all that. Cheers.

I just wish that these big corporations would leave us with something sensible and usable.

Instead, they have a bloody-minded habit of continually fiddling where it is not needed, nor warranted. They should have a policy of: "If it isn't broken, don't even think of fixing it."

"overpaid employees trying to justify their expense"

Indeed so.

Unfortunately, they have succeeded in deliberately irritating the general user. On that score alone, the culprits should be dismissed.

I have tried quite a few browsers. I have big problems with IE10. It freezes quite often when I open a new link. It takes ages before something happens.

I've tried Google Chrome, but the thing is very slow when you use a few tabs. Not the fastest browser!

I have a weak spot for Opera. I love the tiles with favourites. But the newer version doesn't let you customize it like you could with the older version. Besides that, you can't save favourites anymore, you can only use the tile system for you favourites. A nightmare when you have a lot of favourites.

I had speed issues with Firefox too, especially with starting it up.

Avant is reasonable, but it always freezes when I start it up. And almost every time I have to install a new version. And then have to start it up again and hope it doesn't freeze again.

So after all that trouble I decided to try Safari for Windows. Not a bad browser, but it's not very good with keeping passwords as others (especially Opera!!). Besides that, Youtube has decided it will not longer support Safari for Windows and wants me to replace ith with Google Chrome (...), IE or Firefox. And then there is the issue with typing a message here and when you click on a link to check something and then you go back, you loose the text that you have typed. Most browsers will memorize the text. Still liking it though, because it's much faster than most other browsers.

Per the U.S. version -- Tools / Options / Advanced / Network.

Firefox is highly-adjustable for under-the-hood settings, via About:Config (enter that into the addy bar) which gives access to all the hidden control parameters ... but be careful poking around in there, the whole thing can break if a setting is turned wrong.  Settings that are changed from the default are highlighted bold.

I use an extension name of FasterFox Lite which provides a control panel for adjusting some of the performance settings.  It offers four presets (Default, Courteous, Optimized, and Turbo-Charged) and a Custom choice to adjust each available setting.

Full list of the add-ons I use (version):
  Aeon Clouds (6) theme
  Adblock Plus (2.4.1)
  BetterPrivacy (1.68)
  Colorful Tabs (22.1)
  DownloadHelper (4.9.21)
  FasterFox Lite (3.9.9Lite)
  Places Maintenance (1.3)
  QuickJava (2.0.4)
  ReminderFox (2.1.4)
  Tax Mix Plus (0.4.1.2.02)
  Vacuum Places Improved (1.2)
  YouTube High Definition (7.4)

Since Firefox v27.0 update the Undo Close Tab function is not working, I haven't yet investigated why, probably a conflict with one of the extensions.

To adjust the cache in Firefox (Version 26.0)

On the toolbar click Tools then Options

Then click the Advanced Icon and click on Network tab

Press the "Clear Now" button. This may take a few minutes to work. You have to clear the existing cache before resassigning a new size.

Next put a checkbox in the Overide Firefox Cache Management

In the box just below that set the cache to 1mb. and click OK.

Exit Firefox and start it up and it should be faster.

Not so sure about Fasterfox lite.... here's a comment from their web page:

DO NOT install this extension before carefully reading their non-privacy "privacy" policy

On the other hand, the Fasterfox author says the alleged "spying" is only tracking of anon data for statistical performance purposes and it can be turned off in the addon options...

Hi,
you don´t need to worry about us doing any bad thing. We collect an information about a websites that slows down browsing and the browser. We do it for statistics reasons. We want to know the best practisies for making fast websites and know the bottlenecks of the browser. This is voluntary thing and if you go to "About the addon" page in your browser, there is an option where you can turn these statistics off.

If you have some further questions to ask, please write us on [email protected] and we would be more than happy to give you clear answer. If you want to continue this conversation, please use the e-mail. We are checking it everyday so you will not wait for the reply.

FasterFox Lite

The overall rating the extension is 4 of 5 stars.

I'm wondering what is the form of attack of this alleged marketing.  E-mail?  Browser pop-ups or embedded ads?  Postal mail?  I haven't seen any of it.

Uncheck the Allow Anonymous Statistics option.  I've run across several software packages that do this (media players, antivirus, and others) and always uncheck it.

Find the relevant settings in About:Config and adjust them directly.

Well, this thread has been helpful.

I was getting lot of disk thrashing and delays with Firefox a few months back. I switched to Chrome and initially it seemed better, but then I noticed the thrashing returned and seemed to be related to the number of open tabs. I tried other things, like limiting the number of tabs and removing any RSS feed related bookmarks in the banner bar, and clearing cache on a regular basis. But it was still a problem. I attributed it to having only 1 GB of ram in my computer, but I wasn't sure. I also suspected that Adblock Plus was slowing things down, but running without it was too disconcerting.

So today I tried Firefox again - reducing the cache to 2 MB and installing the Foxfaster Lite extension. Voila! So far it seems to run much better. We'll see after I load up a lot of tabs.

Stopping the Bottleneck(s)

With a Pentium 4 and 1GB of RAM - I assume you run Windows 2000 or XP.

If so, Click Start -> Run -> Type "msconfig" -> Click the 'Startup' tab -> Take a screenshot and post it here

Windows 7: Start -> Type "Run," open it -> Follow the steps outlined above

You should be able to reduce the number of un-necessary programs that load upon starting the machine to decrease boot time and free up some of the RAM in your system. Things like the bloatware PC manufacturers load, MS Office/Libre Office Pre-Loading, Java Updaters, Adobe Flash Updates/Reader pre-load, MSN Messenger etc.

If you are running Windows XP, there is practically zero benefit upgrading RAM from 1GB to anything more than that. The performance gains received from increased from any below 1GB are enough to warrant such an upgrade, but the speed increase found from over 1GB is somewhere around 5% IIRC (For anything less than 1GB, I think you can double performance as you jump from 128mb -> 256mb -> 512mb -> 1GB etc).

And if you are particularly brave or computer savvy (and your PC has discrete graphics), you should be able to decrease the amount of RAM that graphics chip "steals" from you. Some systems come pro configured to "steal" as much as 256mb of RAM. Considering discrete graphics is poor performing for 3D tasks, this is wasted memory and WILL NOT help performance. Decrease it to about 24mb speeds things up quite a lot.

Other things you can do include running Disk-Cleanup (Don't compress old files), using a registry cleaner such as 'CCleaner' (I've had good results with this), removing programs you no longer use, old files and the like.

And if that isn't enough: You can wipe Windows and Re-Install... Although all the updates on XP make this a tedious task (Especially with a slow internet connection), so its just better to leave things as they are.

I haven't had any problems with Firefox and I use it both at work and at home. After reading about how changing the cache size down to 1 or 2 mb would increase the load speed I decided to give it a try. After I made the change I could no longer click on links that were inside yahoo mail nor could I right click on them to open link in new tab, etc. I changed the cache size back to the default and now the links in yahoo mail are working again.

I have mine set at 1MB and have no problems. But then again I don't use anything from Yahoo. So maybe Yahoo is the problem.

I found that by upgrading RAM from 1GB to 2 or even 4MB on Windows XP may not speed up the startup of programs(delete bloatware for this) but the programs once running sure do run a lot faster.
