Short version for anyone not following along on my other thread regarding this issue: Old Frigidaire dishwasher began having issues a few weeks ago, cycle would run with the door open, hard water buildup had gotten terrible as well as my detergent pods weren't dissolving properly. So, apartment management elected to buy me a new unit, which took a while including them bringing a unit that was too tall at first (I have an ADA compliant kitchen, so countertops are shorter than average).

Well, they brought the correctly sized unit yesterday. I suppose they couldn't find the updated Frigidaire or maybe it wouldn't be here fast enough. At any rate, new DW is a GE, model number in subject above.

Here are my first-day observations:

It's quieter than the old Frigidaire, but not whisper quiet like, say, a Bosch or higher-end Ka or WP machine might be. Certainly it can run without disturbing us much at all, which is great.

Cleaning power is good. I had a baking dish with a lot of crust on it from making a ravioli lasagna, and it came out spotless.

The only cycle I've used so far is the heavy cycle, which is loooong. I wonder if auto sense would be better for most loads, someone could maybe elaborate on that further for me.

Didn't think I would like the top controls, but I do. I tend to lean on the DW when cooking and occasionally press buttons with my hip. So, no more of that happening, which is a plus.

Only thing I don't care for on this machine is the rack configuration. I can't for the life of me figure out a good orientation for bowls. There just doesn't seem to be a good place on either rack for average size cereal or soup bowls. I enjoyed the racks on my Frigidaire more. Perhaps one of you could give me some tips on loading this thing better.

Over all, I'm pleased. It's certainly nice to have a working DW again. I didn't mind hand-washing dishes while I had to, but I can't say I was ever converted. If a dishwasher is here, I'm going to use it for most things. I just don't have time to fuss about with hand-washing, but to each his own and if people prefer it, I certainly have nothing to say about that. :)

Anyway, I'll try to get some photos of the machine up here later, but in the meantime, feel free to chime in on guidance for loading, maybe which of the three cycles (heavy, auto sense, and light) would be best for everyday use. Also, will temp boost and sanitize work with my water heater only being set at 120? That is the de facto setting for this whole complex, so doubt I could persuade them to raise it for safety reasons.

Hope everyone is having a good weekend!

Appears to be the same base machine as the portable one in the other thread.
What an coincidence...

The machine probably does heating to some extend regardless of boost settings.
It should do just fine as 120F is what these get tested on.

AutoSense uses an optical sensor - so probably the most efficient thing to go for for everyday.

OK... that's good... I just took a look at it but not really an in depth look. It looks like you have a decent dishwasher there. It doesn't look BOL at all...

Glad you got the new dishwasher going.

Having a dishwasher is so important to some people, including me. In the past, I've actually not moved into a place I really loved simply because it didn't have a dishwasher..and I know others who've done the same thing. Washing them by hand is a total pain...I know people who have dishwashers and never use them. They prefer doing it by hand. I will never understand that. But I won't judge.

Henrick, yeah I was kinda weirded out when I saw that Eugene had basically gotten an identical unit same day as me. I had literally just finished my post when I saw Eugene's and was like holy crap that's pretty much my same machine and it was purchased on the same day, how strange! LOL wonder if that's ever happened on AW before, where two people made similar posts on a nearly identical machine purchased on the same day in different parts of the country.

Mark, I agree with you about hand-washing. I didn't hate it, but I certainly don't prefer it. I do it with a few things, like my pots that are too big for most DW's, but for most items it's DW all the way for me. Also, I was surprised they put such a nice machine in here. It's certainly no high-end Bosch like appnut/Bob has (I think he still has a Bosch, last I knew about anyway), but it seems like a better machine than the Frigidaire I had, save for the rack configuration discussed above. I'm sure I'll figure that part out though.

The auto sense cyccle will measure the degree of soil and adjust cycle accordingly. Heavier soil should result in wash temperature automatically increasing to deal with soil.

New dishwasher yay

Hi Ryne glad you finally got a new dishwasher. This is a Chinese built machine that has little to do with the dishwashers that GE sells under their name that are made here in Kentucky.

That said it should do a pretty good job and sure beats not having a dishwasher. Hope you two Enjoy it in good health and happy Thanksgiving.

Jerome, accessibility is meh on this machine, to be honest. The buttons are tactile, but cycles are selected via one button (cycle select) and there's no way for a blind person to track which cycle they've landed on because the machine beeps when the button is pushed, but it's a blue indicator light next to the selected cycle that lets one know what's been chosen. I use the Be My AI interface through the Be My Eyes app to take a picture of the control panel before I start the cycle and ensure I got my options right. I've just been leaving it on auto sense, because the machine does remember your previous selections once it's powered on, so usually I can just hit start without selecting anything. However, a few days ago, I had accidentally hit sanitize without realizing I had done so until the cycle was underway, which stuck me with a nearly three-hour long cycle. So, I now use Be My AI to check myself real quick before starting the machine.

John, thank you! It's definitely not my favorite dishwasher ever, but it's certainly not the worst by any stretch and oh yes definitely preferred over not having a DW at all. I like it much better than the Frigidaire it replaced, it certainly cleans better than the Frigidaire did even before it started acting up. Really the only thing I'm not crazy about with this machine is the rack layout. It's hard to find a place for bowls and my plates lean like crazy, but one just has to get creative with loading. Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family as well! :)
