Poor Grace has underwent surgery a couple of times.

Finally, she is a happy camper!

First, I want to thank Jimmy for sending me the info I needed to get this started.

If anyone here has ever worked on a GE fridge you'll know where I'm coming from on this. From what I've found they manufactured their own parts which makes it very difficult to replace them. I'm starting to think they are their own animal.
It all started when sometime last year the relay went out. Sounds like a simple fix right? Nope. The relay is a four wire, which is next to impossible to find unless you have one laying around or a donor fridge. Then they converted them to a three wire, but you have to have a gaurdette ( however you spell it ) in order to make the three wire work. Well, it took forever to find just the right one and she was running again.
Great, until I blew a breaker and flipped it back on while she was running and blew it up again! ( from what I was told anytime that happens make sure you shut the fridge down for 10 min and let the liquid run back down. If you don't that can happen )
Needless to say after that I decided to replace the compressor.

Hopefully she be good to go for another 50!

I'll post a few pictures.

The first one is the old compressor. The metal tray that's attached for the drain pan to sit on has a big tube that runs underneath it. Freon circulates thru it to evaporate the water I suppose. Note: If you ever replace a compressor like this watch how much freon you put in it. It acually calls for 3 lbs. on the old compressor but, without the tube being there anymore it takes a lot less. Less than a lb.

Next we had to make something for the new compressor to sit on. It's a couple of pieces of aluminum. Notched out on either side of the fridge so they would fit tight.

That is just beautiful! I'm so glad you were able to get her up and running.
I know Pushtostart will appreciate it's beauty as well.

Very interesting.

Could you describe a step-by-step process for replacing the compressor on a vintage fridge? It might be handy to know. Also, were you able to reuse the other parts of the refrigeration system? What refrigerant did you use?

Looks fantastic,
Dave

Stunning!

That is just beautiful! Reminds me of my folk's 55 with the swing-out shelves - what a great idea those were.
May the new compressor keep cold and strong!!!

Wow is right

I am sooo impressed. Can we have some more pics, please? As in a panorama of what is obviously an incredible kitchen?

Gosh!

Wow!

Bethann - Great job and what a beautiful fridge! I didn't even know you had this one. Guessing about a 55/56/57 ish?

The compressor in my pink '62 GE fridge took a dive a few weeks ago. I am very interested about your conversion. I'll shoot you an email.

Ben

I'm impressed with how you were able to do the work with 'Grace' and style... (ouch!) Very nice refrigerator.

I'm so glad you're here with names for all your appliances. It makes me feel not so goofy driving around in a service truck the kids named 'Jeri'...

Thanks for all the compliments Guy's!

There was no way I couldn't fix her. After all she's Emma's sister ! LOL

If it wasn't for a friend of mine it wouldn't have happened. He works on refrigeration and has all the tools. It couldn't be done without the right gauges, plus R-12.

There really isn't a conversion per say. All the lines stay the same, same refrigerate. Just added a drier.

The compressor is made by Copeland, 1/4 hp. About 150.00. It's the tools that are the problem, plus the knowledge. If you don't do it properly you'll blow it up.

I recommend that you have someone help you that knows what their doing.

The thing is the compressor was fine, it was the relay that was bad. After all the time I spent looking for parts the first time it wasn't worth it to do again. Now if something happens at least it can be fixed without pulling my hair out.

I'll post pic's soon of the whole kitchen. It's almost done. ( no comment Veg! )

Ben, she's a 56

Woo Hoo

Way to go Bethann. Ain't it a blessing to have knowledgable friends. Just love that turquoise. Another beautiful vintage appliance saved. Can't wait to see pictures of those kitchens. It's been awhile, you're going to have to repost pictures of your babies and their names.

Glad to see the pixs Beth Ann! That is such a beautiful fridge!

It's chillin' though my love.... not chilly.... <:

Lovely Kitchen

What a beautiful Kitchen you have! Love that Fridge. I really like the flooring. Ours needs to be replaced, and I would like do it like your, or Roberts. The cheap tiles we put down five year ago, look like they are 10 years old.
