My cousin Tyler is graduating from high school in a week or so, and I'm planning on sending him a check. However, I don't know what amount would be appropriate as I've not given any grad gifts in a few years. Keep in mind he's a boy from a rural area in Mississippi, not a big city like NY or LA. When I graduated I usually got between $10 & $25, but that was in '74. What are your ideas?

My favortie little cousin finished nursing school a couple of years ago. I sent her a $100.I think it costs more per day to be a teenager than an adult, and many parents have the credit card balances to prove it. alr2903

I got a fancy silver or gold colored pen and (mechanical) pencil set from strangers and cash/checks from family.

$50 to $100 would be quite generous.

If cuz's family can't afford a fancy party, and 'tennie' wants one, your help ($ KA-CHING $)could make it a fabulous/memorable one.

My last remaining grandparents

Sent me a congratulatory card and a note saying: "At some point in the next four years, something is going to go wrong which you don't want to discuss with your parents.
We know them, we raised them.
Call us, we'll help you sort it.

That was worth more than anything else ever could have been and sure enough, I needed to use it before my third semester.

Money is nice and useful, a "I'll stand by you when the fit hits the shan" note is even more so. Especially if the kid knows you can be relied on not to go running to mummy and daddy.

I love this. I have had to make some pretty uncomfortable calls to my parents. And or grandparents My gram was the best wrote a check no questions asked and nobody ever knew about it. We all make mistakes when were are young, Its what we learned from them and how we handle them that makes the difference.

Thanks everyone

Tyler is getting a check for $50. The note is a nice idea, but I've not see him for about 8 years, and he's 750 miles away. If we had a closer relationship that would be a fine idea. I think he knows I'd help him however I could, though.
