I'm thinking about buying a GE Diswasher GSD4060R1555 new in the box never used listed on Craigslist for $250.00.

What year were these dishwashers produced? Will this last longer then the new dishwashers made today? Will it hold a lot of dishes?

My 7 year old Whirlpool tall tub DU1055XTSB1 is sounding like its breaking down. Don't want to spend a lot on a new DW at the moment.

I'm attaching the link with a picture.

Thanks!
David

Since....

....The ad is already gone, and I didn't see the dishwasher, I can't really say for sure, BUT -

You might have been spared a lot of trouble. GE's dishwashers can be okay (more recent models) or very troublesome (older ones).

If you want a vintage dishwasher that will perform and last, look for an older KitchenAid. You might have to do some repairs before installing it for good, but a KitchenAid from the '60s or '70s will outlast and outperform most anything made today.

Thanks for the advice

I ran the Whirlpool again today. It only made the noise once or twice. We are going to run it till it literally falls apart. No rush to replace at this time. Our family consist of me and my wife plus our two small dogs to clean up after! :)

Just doing my homework if it should die anytime soon. I highly doubt my wife will let me install an older machine in her kitchen. She does not understand vintage appliances like I do which is OK!

Once again thanks for all your advice and wisdom!

Peace,
David

David:

The best way to get someone used to the idea of vintage appliances is to get them around some. If you know anyone who is running restored vintage majors, it could be a great opportunity to get your wife around them and let her see for herself.

I myself have a 1972 GE self-cleaning range. When I tell people about it, the reaction is (without their actually saying it), "Um, that's a little weird." When they see it, the reaction is, "Wow, I WANT one!"

The trick is to let people see something in good shape doing its job for a whale of a lot less money than new. My range looks as good - if not better - than most brand-new appliances, and does things new ones can't do. Most people think of older appliances as dirty and broken, and nothing could be further from the truth in my case.

You might have sung a different tune if you'd seen the aftermath of a little cooking disaster tonight, LOL.

I got a phone call when I'd just put some rice on to cook. I got distracted, forgot the rice and had a humongous boilover to clean up.

The range looks like the picture again now, but it was not pretty when it happened.

Oh, well - the more you use Brillo on your aluminum burner bowls, the shinier they get....

Is your Whirlpool making a bit of a low squealing noise? Our Kenmore has been randomly making a low squeal here and there for about a year, and is still working fine.

Buzzing

Its like a motor with a bad bushing almost like an electrical sound. But we have not smelled anything hot like something burning.

We are going to use it for a while longer and see what happens! It is cleaning great this week!

The reason we purchased this DW is our other DW (which came with the house) was a Maytag (non-reverse rack) model the MDB series purchased 1998. They had a recall on them possible catching fire thru the rinse aid dispenser. My wife became afraid to use it. She thought even after the retrofit modification was done to correct the problem it could still burn down the house. I bought this Whirlpool to replace the Maytag. The Maytag never had a problem except when the inlet water valve went bad which I changed out myself. That is what I miss about the older Maytags is being able to work on them myself.
