No hard water stains that I can see, but when you lift the top and check behind the machine, she's a filthy mess. I'll have to pull the inner tub and see how the outer tub's doing, and POR-15 whatever rust is there, if any. The cabinet isn't perfect either, a little scratched up on the sides and surface rust in the back, but it's not as bad as other machines I've seen.

A thorough cleaning underneath, new fill flume hose, leak fix, and probably a belt change, however, and KK will be good as new and ready to wash!

And...she also runs well with the "Kenmore whine" and (aside from the hum of the motor) the spin is pretty quiet, with no rattling or bearing noise!
 
Austin - that is pretty cool! Love the color, and the hidden controls. I would think that the alphabet would be cumbersome at first, but would be very handy once you got used to what each 'letter' means. Looks really sharp!

BTW - what are the boxes in the back ground w/ Asian writing on them? Big into fortune cookies? =)

Is the bleach dispenser timed? Is there an agitator-mounted softener dispenser (seems like there should be one).

Interesting color combo for the agitator and cap, don't recall seeing that before.
 
Great save there! Looks like it is in good shape for the year. Interesting design, I wonder if there is a way to back light the controls, they remind me of a friends 66 Charger Dash. You are getting a great collection.

That's a beauty Austin!! I love the controls. That dial kind of reminds me of old Hotpoints that were sold over here in the 70s or so!

Yeah, its just as you described the other night. That is a great find! The most likely reason for the different color agitator cap is because the rubber scrubber cap is missing! You are not supposed to see that black cap!

Anyway, can't wait to see her all restored to her original beauty! Congratulations!

What, NO suds saver?

Great shape. Nice color. Great job. I'm wondering if there was a gold agitator cap that was replaced. I would bet the bleach dispenser is not timed. I had the matching electric dryer in "coffee" once. The heater thermostat was stuck in the on position. That baby got hot. It wasn't as nice as your washer. I didn't appreciate it when I had it. I think I gutted it for the motor, door switch, and a few other parts. I wonder what they were thinking when they created machines that had doors you could slide over the controls?

Very impressive machine...In my opinion..sears definatley had some great looking machines over the years..If it werent for sears....I doubt that whirlpool would have been in bussiness today as a major player thanks for posting the pic...fun to look at..Tim
 
Wow, Austin, what an excellent find. I can't believe what great shape the tub and agitator are in! Did that originally come with a scrubber cap on the agitator? The hidden controls are very cool.

I grew up with a 1960 KM and it had a 1/3 h.p. motor. Had they switched to 1/2 h.p. by 1967 (or whatever year your machine hails from).

My parnts had a Wards Signature late 1960's but no hole based ag ,2 speed with avocado & matching dryer. The dryer had a light inside the door opening instead of the drum interior, dryer would often chew up or break belts. Once ,the dryer motor came loose & a metal part of the inside of the dryer cabinet cut through the front end of the motor shaft. It had the no tumble feature but not the lever type & instant hurricane in your face from the fan with the drum removed.
 
bleach dispenser

I think it IS timed, it's probably the type where there's a plastic reservoir with a hose leading to the outer tub. There's a plastic plunger rod that plugs the hole in the bottom of the reservoir that's lifted by a solenoid when it's time for the bleach to be added. On more deluxe machines, the reservoir had two compartments, the other being for FS.
 
Wow - it looks pretty good overall from the outside. What a great project for you to work on, you'll have a lot of fun. These are one of the strangest Kenmore panel designs, always intriguing to me as a kid. I saw a set of these in coppertone a few years back at a sale, they were in the basement and hadn't been used in years as the lady had a stack set upstairs in the bathroom. OMG. This is identical, avocado and all, to a machine Steve found one Saturday while a bunch of us were over at George's former house.

Avocado too boot. I saw the companion dryer in white last
April when I was visiting friends in Spokane. Interesting that they were fancifying the controls (at least the timers)
in that era and then concealing them. I love the mostly metal Kenmores. Can't wait to attend a Texas washin!
 
Well, Austin, you'll surely be able to wash your permanent press and cottons with confidence now that you have "dial by the alphabet". The knobs are pristine. That's sliding door really protected them.
 
I just noticed something

The timer looks backwards because it runs counter-clockwise! The markings are stationary on this one (as opposed to the whole thing moving on other machines). What a funky and rare machine. And I'll bet it agitates and fills during PP cool down.
