Washing Machine Protection Agents

Washing soda has pH of between 11 and 12 making it very alkaline. While this is great for cleaning purposes it can do a number on metals especially the more softer sort used in domestic washing machines.

Powdered laundry and dishwashing detergents have "protection agents" (largely sodium silicates and metasilicates) which are used to buffer pH levels and protect metal parts from corrosion. Even so heavy use of washing soda and or any other highly alkaline substance may cause harm to certain washing machine parts.

This is one reason why commercial/industrial laundry detergents are often not recommended for domestic washing machines. They are highly alkaline containing amounts of things like sodium hydroxide (lye) and washing soda that will quickly attack softer metals used in domestic washing machines. Commercial/industrial washers are made with harder or stronger metals to better withstand such exposure day in and day out.
