I intend to see it eventually. I have the original, which I have never seen, here right now from Netflix to watch first.

Loved It!

Saw it last night! We got to the theatre about 45 minutes early (9pm show), they had a line going down the hallway. About 15 minutes into standing in line, I would say there were 150+ people in line.

It was FaNtAsTiC! Really up-beat, energetic... Just like the Broadway version. The director stayed true to the stage version, and made necessary adaptations where needed.

John Waters made a cameo, as did Ricki Lake. John Travolta was great... the entire cast was great! They really cast all parts extremely well.

We all walked out of the theatre smiling and still humming the tunes. I downloaded the movie soundtrack last week from iTunes.

I highly recommend seeing it!

Saw John Travolta on David Letterman the other night and he was talking about this film. Believe it or not, HE plays the Devine part! Travolta in drag.
What will we see next?

But I agree, it's hard to see a remake of a movie without thinking/comparing it to the original version.

I'm going tonight! I loved the John Waters' original. Never saw the musical version, but the film was practically a musical, anyway...

Dan, I know what you mean about Divine. No matter how good John Travolta is, he'll never be able to so much as kiss the hem of Divine's mu-mu. Divine had/has no peer.

I too have the soundtrack. However I am desperate to go see it! We in the UK Finally got the same release date as the US!

The main thing that attracted me was one of the actors - Zac Efron(Link Larkin). I was only attracted to it because he is in it. After watching the ever famous High School Musical - I am now hooked to any thing that he is in!

Although after listening to the soundtrack, I want to go see it even more because it sounds so awesome!

Link Larkin

Yeah, they did well--having a teen heart-throb play a teen heart-throb.

He is a cutie. :)

James Marsden who plays Corny Collins is also a hottie.

I was figuring it'll never be as good as the original and then saw the clip the other day when Travolta was on Letterman. It looks really well done. The local reviews in our paper were very good. Now will we ever see Travolta as Francis Fishpaw or Babs Johnston.. I doubt it.. LOL

Pete---the new film is getting good reviews almost everywhere, which is encouraging. Remakes are so often disappointing; sounds like this one will do the first film proud!

I can't imagine anyone being able to fill Divine's shoes when it comes to playing Babs, LOL!

I Saw it saturday nite

Thought it was great. My Friend Hank loved it too.. He says it it the best J/T has done..

It might be interesting to have JT play Babs in a Pink Flamingos remake! Think about it. He can show his/her son the most special love a mother can show a son (think couch scene in the nemisis' house)???!!!! :-O

I was friends with Devine way before she did Hairspray.I am also friends with John Waters.I have all the "campy movies they did as well as "Hairspray"and multiple autographed cans of Aquanet Hairspray I got at the now defunked retro store (pink Flamingo's"they had in Baltimore(Fells Point Across from the house I lived in for 3 years)that was managed by Ms Edith Massey another one of the great "campy"stars Mr Waters had hired for his films.

Edith was a true sweetheart and had a beautiful callico/Orange cream cat that she'd keep at the regester on a leashe for everybody to love. She'd call me 5 AM every thursday and saturday(trash pick up days) and we'd go down all the ally ways going throgh all the tras to find treasures that would sell at her store.

I went and saw Hairspray this past friday and was so glad I did!The only thing I felt they could have improved on was they should have filmed it in Baltimore not California. The original buildings are still there including the Eldorado School of Beauty that was originaly chosen for the fassion store where they had "Bigger women's sizes"available."Ah uzet ta' liv aer hon!Ye no ah'd eet dem krabbz n drink 'at Naddy Boe wiff 'em!Idd wuz da oanlyest thing ta' do onna hott summer day in Balmer,Hon!afferwerdz, weed warsh up da dizhes in da zink den wrench 'em off n dra 'em.Ya no hon, when Prokker N gamppull wood be makin 'air soaps on wenzdays n da wind wuz blowin da right way ya could smell at lardass fat meltin but,on therzdayz,'aid be add'n da pirrfyoom!

Pink Flamingos

I thought this film was a scream. I bought the 25th anniversary edition on VHS at Suncoast Videos. I would love to see all of the pre big time Waters movies, I do also have "Polyester" and a TV copy of "Hairspray". I have, somewhere, the TV documentary of Divine, what a performer! Laundromat, you are blessed to actually know or have known these people, Edith Massey is one of my favorites, and Divine left us way too soon. I also like Channing Wilroy, he looked like a hoot.

Quote from Frigilux:

"No matter how good John Travolta is, he'll never be able to so much as kiss the hem of Divine's mu-mu. Divine had/has no peer".

What he said!

I was privileged to see Divine on stage a few times before his all-too-early passing, and he was one fine performer: very, very funny, and way more energetic than could be imagined. Polyester is my favorite movie of all time, but then how could it miss with the combination of Divine, Edith Massey, Mink Stole, and of course Tab Hunter. Another favorite of mine in that movie is Joni Ruth White, who played LaRue (Francine's mother-from-hell) to perfection.

It is sad to think that the new "Hairspray", in addition to doing without Divine, also lacks Jerry Stiller, Sonny Bono, and Deborah Harry. Harry's hair as Velma von Tussle, and the Von Tussle apartment, are treasures of the original movie . . . too bad the laundry room was never shown, because I think the von Tussles had TOL Philco or Kelvinator written all over them.

I saw it tonight, and really liked it. My only criticism would be that I thought it went a bit long, and sort of dragged in the middle. I also think that John Waters handled the main themes of the plot (racial and weight discrimination) much more gracefully in his version.

But overall it was a very good movie. Fun tunes, great sets and costumes - definitely worth seeing.

I just saw it! IMO it is A-MAZING!

I loved every minute of the 2 hours it ran, and really want to see it again. Superb acting, storyline and fantastic voices, especially Nikki Blonsky!

Love the humour in parts of it too!
