Has anyone seen an ignition system like this?

On most old gas ranges, turning the thermostat out of the OFF position opened the gas valve and the pilot light ignited the rushing gas, usually with a loud whosh. What you say functions as the pilot almost certainly has to be the constantly burning pilot since it has a tube for gas and not a wire for electricity as for an igniter. Really old Magic Chef ranges had a valve which was turned to supply gas to the burner and then the Red Wheel regulator, sometimes positioned on the side of the range, was adjusted to the desired temperature.

Royal Chef built in gas cooking appliances were the hallmark of cheapness in a home. They were a good tip off that other cheap materials had been used in the construction.

Hans, I've never heard of Enterprize (except for car rentals) or Martha Washington stoves, but I have heard of Modern Maid. When I was walking through a new house in the late 70s and saw a GE badged cooktop that had been made by Modern Maid, I sorta threw up in the back of my mouth a little. It was one of those 36 inch brushed chrome things with a grill/griddle.

With those Aztec or Incan designs, do you suppose that was the Apocalypse model or the End of Time model? I guess if the pilot went out, it could be either.

Love the burned or melted thermostat knob.

Our house built in 1964 had a Martha Washington electric wall oven, cooktop, & hood.  In turquoise.

A relative had an Enterprise gas range, probably bought from the local butane/propane company at the time.

Here in Canada, we used to have Enterprise ranges built in New Brunswick. They were nicely built and were very similar to US Monarch Ranges.

Enterprise had wood, wood/electric and gas versions too. I guess it's not the same company as in the US.

Here's another Canadian Enterprise gas range.

Royal Chef

I believe this company had a factory in Illinois. It was a very very old building.
It burnt to the ground and that was it for Royal Chef.

US vs Canadian Enterprise

Totally different, The Canadian built range was like a Monarch, which was a VERY good range, the US version was made in Chattanooga Tennessee and was just a builders grade generic range.

Hans, Let's see. In Tennessee, there was Tennessee Stove Works and then a company with a name of Samuel Stamping & Enameling that made the Suburban line of gas and electric builtins. They were weird. The electric oven looked just like the gas oven with a little oven underneath the big one where the gas oven had the broiler compartment.

ED, funny how many stove companies burned down. That's what happened to the Crown Stove Co. factory also. I guess they might have had a metal foundry and the porcelaining furnaces and either of those could have been a sorce of ignition.

There were

MANY ranges made in Tenn, Dixie,Hardwick, Modern Maid, Vesta, Suburban,Magic Chef,Brown,Enterprise, Martha Washington,Maid of Athens..ETC.all were what we refer to in the South as an "Off Brand".Cleveland Tenn was the center of it all, along with having the headquarters to the Church of God!

Royal Chef Gas Range

Hi Matt, the system this RC oven uses was very common in the 1960s-1970s it is not at all unusual, those pilot safety switches are getting really expensive and hard to find as they contain mercury.    PS [ the rack under the broiler in upside down and in backwards ]

Hope you are doing well, John.
