Have I finally found "The One"?

I've been looking for years for the Whirlpool Convertible that was my first (used) washer that I purchased when I was 21. I know other members have them in there collection, but I have not been lucky to come across one in the last 20 years.

It's the model that has a full size wash basket, and a locking mechanism in the back where it pulls up the wheels, and if I remember correctly, drops down feet.

I'm hoping that this is it! Any thoughts?

but I believe that is a portable/convertible 24" model, It can be on wheels or have the feet....not both....but these are very nice, waterfall filter and high speed spin, and they hold a lot just the same......

Yeah,

as I am studying the picture, and remembering the one I had, I'm pretty sure mine had a full width chrome handle that you would use if you wanted to move it around.

How much laundry can you wash in it?

Suprising alot, usually better with a mixed load, but judging your size you should get 3 or 4 pairs of jeans done at a time,
I was able to get 3 sets of clothes per wash(pants, shirts, underwear and socks), depends on bulk of the load, but the only thing I could not get in there was my comforter, then I was off to Mom's or the Laundromat.....

These machines were great for scrubbing, white underwear and socks, medium water level, double your detergent and color safe bleach, and the warmest/hottest water....no stain has a chance....you can't beat it!

late 24"BDs

they are great little washers-same transmission as the big
BDs and they wash very well with most of the same sounds.
different pulleys though and a spin speed close to 800 rpm
-i tached mine at 790rpm but was having a little trouble
holding the tach steady on the agitator.

this link will give you a little idea of how well they wash and capacity, he does add a fair amount of clothes with the full level, and rollover is great, you could probably add a few more pieces and still get great results

Have the same model, right down to colour (Harvest Gold).

That one knows of from reading owner's manual and such, there was never a bar or thing to move unit around. However as others have posted it was convertible because one can use either standard hose (drain and water connections), or the portable "quick connect" system. Plus the feet could be swapped out for casters, and vice versa.

This link is the kenmore version, I like the splash shield better on these and the lint filter, but still to give you an idea of how great they are as far as washing and spinning, plus capacity

The second video is actually my little 81 Lady K model. You make me feel like a star Yogi!

It's a great machine I wish I had a place to hook it up. If it were just me here, I'd have them as my main laundry pair. I wouldn't pass one up though even if it wasn't what I'm looking for. If you have the matching dryer, the faster spin of these is nice.

I think Guy is referring to the earlier models that were actually full-size 24" BD's like what RevinKevin just got. They look similar and some had locking legs w/casters and a pull bar. That would be a late 60's / early 70's version and quite rare. These smaller machines took their place and are much more common and optioned.

COMPACT PORTABLE WASHERS

Guy the one you are looking for with the larger tub was made from 1965 - 1974 in various models under both the WP & KM names. This earlier model held 16 gallons of water verses 10.6 gallons for the one you pictured, so as you can imagine the older one will wash at least 50% more clothes. WP changed to the smaller machine to solve two major problems with the older machine, 1 the machine was too big and heavy for many users and 2 the spin speed was only around 540 RPMs which when paired with a portable 120 volt dryer just took to long to dry things. The newer compact machines started out with a 920 RPM spin and it was reduced in the late 1970s to 860 RPMs this worked much better with the 120 volt dryers.
