The washing machine that means the end- the end of washday!

A VERY early 3226 Keymatic- still with the cabinet and door gasket of the 3224!

Apart from the (surface) rust its not too bad actually :)

The door gasket is beyond help tho :(- not suprising as its the original blue version!

Ok how did I come by this ..

Basically a very elderly couple came in and brought a Hoover washer dryer to replace a broken Hoovermatic twin tub.

They asked if they could use the washer dryer from the tap and I said it wasnt advisable, even if we could get a appropiate adaptor.

Thats a pity- we did with the last one they said......

Thats because it was a twin tub I said....

No before that- we had a Keymatic....

At this point I said its a pity it was replaced with a twin tub , If it had been the Keymatic Id have loved to have seen it as I collect old appliances.......

Well we didnt get rid of it- its been stood in the corner of the kitchen for about 20 years, it dosent work tho...

At this point I nearly wet myself lol......

Anyhow I was asked if id like it and obviously said yes!

Looking forward to making it pretty again :)

Seamus

P.s The Hoovermatic and another mystery machine will be collected tuesday- If the mystery machine is a MK41 Servis its already spoken for lol!!

Wow! Seamus! You lucky guy! That is amazing how you ended up with that! do u think u'll be able to restore it? I bet parts are rare! I've always wanted to see one of these in action!

Congrats again!

Darren

Thanks Guys

This is gonna be a challenge to say the least- 1st up is trying to find a sutiable door gasket lol!.

This has been posted before but heres a link to an advert for the 3224 posted by Si!

Oh. My. God!!!

Congratulations, Seamus, that's just fantastic!!! Couldn't have gone to a better home! I'm so pleased for you, fancy that, there was a KM in Dover all the time!

Is the pulsator missing? Did the couple give any idea as to why the machine expired? I really hope you can get the old girl up and running again, have you had a poke round the insides yet?

I noticed from my 3226 brochure that yours has a different facia too, later ones were black instead of blue.

Can't wait to see what model the HM is, have they given you any idea as to the ID of the mystery machine - top loader, horizontal axis? I presume it's another automatic?

Either way, that's definitely a find of the year, and we're not even halfway through January yet! Bring on the widebodies and matchboxes!!!

Hey Mate

I didnt even notice the Pulsator as it was pretty dark when I was taking the pics- I believe some were modified to tumble action only and it looks like this one may have been!.

Its defiantly a very early 1963 version, Im gonna get the serial number when I investigate further on Monday(its at work).

All in all a great addition- especially as it was free!

Hoover Keymatic

Arghh Brilliant!, what a buzz when they said the word KEYMATIC....he he :-)
Lovely news that you have got one

Congratulations

Gary

What a great find! It's great when things like that happen. I think they spin about 700rpm (correct me if I'm wrong) which is quite fast for the time. I bet it wasn't cheap when it was new.

Happy restoring and all the best

Rob

congrats

Well done Seamus.

They are a fab machine , i have not had chance to do much else with mine as mine needs a door seal too! as do about 6 others!! mine also has a spin issue with a slipping clutch but i think that can be remedied with some shims. Chester Mike has one too and will recommend care in moving the beast as its suspension is made from very thin wire, which can snap and be a bugger to fix apparently. I attach some photos of mine where you can see the original transit brackets , I would recommend making some so you can lift and tip the beast without damage.
Also if you do plug it in, one tip before you do is to remove the motor first, (tilt the machine forward and it drops down ) and lubricate the shaft where the starter switch slides up and down, mine had stuck and instead of staying on a split second it was on continuously and nearly burnt the motor out until I figured out why it was getting so hot and noisy, a little wd40 and fine emery paper and mine now tumble, pumps and turbulates fine but will not spin without a shrieking howl at which second I kill the power.

I was thinking we could adapt two hoover door seals by joining them together as the opening may be a similar size to newer hoovers its just the depth that's needed as the the drum tilts down and back when full of water.

well done

Wash day? just forget it !!!

Brilliant find!

congratulations on a wonderful find there Seamus.

Yep it is an early 3226 and, although down to a small detail, is a version i haven't seen before - see my attached picture of a mate of mines 3226 and spot the subtle detail difference.

Re: the facia colour of the 3226 mentioned earlier by Simon. Although i could be wrong, my understanding of the 3226 is that they all had metallic blue facia stripes. Thing is, from different angles and under different lighting conditions, the strips can change shade and appear light blue right through to black.

The smaller picture shows the same machine as the main image, but taken under different conditions and angles - gives you an idea of what i mean in the above paragraph.

Once again - congrats on the find Seamus.
Cheers
Paul

Keymatic Door Seal

Would a seal from a different manufacturer do?

The porthole looks quite a small diameter, so would a Candy or a Zanussi seal do instead?

Hoover - The Product Of Experience...!!!

Well done Seamus, welcome to the club!!!you`ve sweated on this for a while, I must say it looks it great nick, at least all the panels come off for a re-spray when required...Just think you couldnt have made that up, using a twinny when one of these is in the corner, + another!!!

I bet the other machine is either a cream Hotpoint Empress or a creda debonair!! if it is the proverbial Mk41, ...well!!

Whats up with the cold water valve ?? has it been changed?? can peek the blue thing under the cover!!!I`m half way through the Qualtex catalogue trying to match old door boots, up to K for kelvinator!!, the later hoovers are a bit smaller on the outer front door, keymatic was slightly larger with a flip lip edge....Paul, small detail?? is it the Keymatic word logo??

If all fails they make a great bar at parties!!!

You got it Mike...

Well i did say a small detail.

Never seen a 3226 with its name written in upper and lower case!

This is what my spreadsheets have reduced me to - even down to getting the name as it appeared on the machines!

Visit to a shrink for me fairly shortly.
Paul

Great news :-D

The Turbulator(pulsator) is still there it just didnt show very well !. Also both it and the drum appear to turn freely :-). Am just off to get some random door gaskets from our other shop lol !
