Heads Up Bendix Buyer beware

Here is that Bendix again.

I thought I was talking to the seller about getting it, we were emailing. The prior auction ended with no bids he's relisted it again for $300. For that $300 he expects the buyer to drive there, unbolt 70 year old bolts and haul it up out of his basement.

Here's my thinking: For 5 hours of my time and labor the machine is only worth $200 to me.
1) The drive is an hour & 30 minuntes from here each way.
2) The condition of the machine on platform is unknown as he won't plug it in for some reason.
3) It would cost him/her a $100 bucks to get piano movers to put that machine on ground level for "local pick up" which are his terms.
4) He never answered my questions on the basement egress.
That to me is a BIG NO, NO on ebay. Answer all questions!

5) I offered $200 and he said he would get back to me which he didn't.

SO the machine is back on ebay guys & gals for $300 again.

Good luck, it's not on my work list now!

Your approach sounds reasonable

Your approach sounds like how I think too. One has the cost/toil/bull to remove the beast out of the basement and cost to get in in a truck and to your place.


Not being able to plug it in would bug me too; it adds much risk. To get it up a set of basement stairs would need probably 2 folks?.


70 year old bolts might be stuck too and have to be cut off. One might have an install where the installer hit the top threads as a locking method.

Maybe after some dead no bid auctions his price will drop.

If sellers are reticent that always starts alarm bells ringing with me......and as you would have to work up one hell of a sweat (no bad thing ) in some ways) to shift it.

Try suing for libel and slander as the fleabay questioner says, Mr Seller, and you'll find out that 1) truth is a defense to libel claims, and 2) you can be found liable for abuse of process.

Hm. I got my Bendix (now Sharples) for less than half that, and it was already unbolted, and in a walk out basement. The machine was in as-is shape, but a more deluxe model.

seems like it wouldn't be too much trouble to plug it in and test it. Can't imagine why you'd not be allowed. These things are a pain to move around, even for a bunch of queers, and the market for them is minuscule. A little flexibility might go a long way in getting some cash in his pocket, and this boat anchor out of his basement.

If the seller is foolish enough to post something like that question on the advert, well that really speaks volumes.

When i clicked on the message that someone had wrote on the ebay account he/she has wrote we are all a bunch of queers on here. How narrow minded some people are. I used to feel embarrased when i was a child about liking washing machines and until i founf this site it has helped me to realise there is nothing wrong with it and as Robert put a video on of a convention, which i watched in 2006, its said you are not alone lol.

Offensive and Unacceptable

I read the listing for the Bendix and found the language used offensive and unacceptable. I understand that people have different views regarding homosexuality, but there is no place for that kind of language on an Ebay listing in 2010. I reported the listing to Ebay; I encourage others to do the same. I would have reacted the same way if they had used the " N-word" or something else. The sellers response to the comments made clearly stated that he is OK with that kind of language.

S%~t Smear would call us a bunch of queers? Those of us that are not, nonwithstanding. It probably won't sell at that price.
The person that sent that info/question to the seller is an idiot. If the seller had lick of sense he would have not answered it publicly. All jetcone conveyed was that the seller was less than forthcoming. Ebay cares about commissions
and fees , period. They aren't going to do anything.

I think Ebay will be shocked to learn that my personal information was used in an auction as members are supposed to remain anonymous throughout! I will contact them about this breach of trust.

As for the seller good luck to him/her and may he/she live long. What happens from now on will not alter my opinion or experience there. If there is someone here dying to pay $300 bucks for that machine good luck to you, after over 900 transactions on ebay, I know the lay of the land by now.
As to who put up my name , well lets just say ebay will answer that question, then we'll know what to do. With the second largest law firm in Metro Boston, I'll get good Council!

It was in poor taste for someone to send that question to the seller. It was also in poorer taste for him to post it.

It's just an old Bendix. We've all been called worse than a bunch of queers. I mean, for the most part, that's an accurate statement, though in poor taste. Then again, maybe that person was gay and therefore it isn't so bad to call another guy a queer. I am just saying this as a fairly well adjusted gay(queer) man.

Stop the legal talk and the persecuted drama and get back to finding more washers.

That Seller Ought To Be Happy

To have interest in his scrap metal from a group of collectors. Were it not for persons such as us, probably the only interest would come from scrap metal dealers.

Every person with a vintage appliance think's they have a gold mine. I can almost promise you that washer will end up sit sitting in that basement for years to come. Especially considering the seller's apparent attitude.

I mean you wan't someone to pay $$$ for a washer that probably is in anything but ready to go condition; has to be unbolted from several pounds of concrete, hauled up flights of stairs, and out of the house onto a truck. He should be paying someone to haul that chuck of metal out of his basement if he wants it gone that badly. If it weren't for the Internet, I can assure you that is exactly what would have happened.

Like I say, the seller can die with his secret. Then guess what will happen to that washer? It will be hauled out of the basement and put on the crub by whomever settles his estate, to be snapped up by roving bands of "recyclemen" on the prowl for metal/appliances.
