Went into local Food Emporium (supermarket chain part of A&P) to use a rain check for 8 0'Clock coffee and noticed something different. The large 36 ounce bags are being replaced by 33 ounces. Yes sir down sizing has come to the brand and as always the price is *not* going down. You will still pay the same, just get less product.

FWIW A&P sold off the 8 0'Clock coffee brand awhile back, but haven't noticed any difference in quality, though some of my favourite roasts (Boka and Italian Dark Roast), are hard to find.

So lads, if you like this coffee, better stock up on the large size while you still get your money's worth.

For the record, Domino sugar has pulled the same stunt with their dark brown sugar. Went to purchase a box the week before Thanksgiving for baking and cooking and noticed the box looked "different". Sure enough, got it home and compared with the box already in my cupboard, the new dark brown sugar box is smaller and contains less.

Everyone is wondering where is inflation? Well here is part of the answer, everyone is shrinking products down so we get less, but the price is the same. Chicken pieces packs that once gave six, are now five for the same price.

I believe the Indian enterprise, Tata, bought out the 8 O'clock Coffee line but they do still sell it on-line. I think the link was www.eightoclock.com and that they had a US base of operations in New Jersey...
I can still find it in Ontario, in the Ottawa area, if anyone gets desparate!

Speaking of downsizing: Went to Frigidaire's website to look around and found the washer I bought three months ago has been downsized from a 4.8 cu. ft. tub to a 4.4! And the price of the washer, as is always the case with Frigidaire, is about $150 higher than it was when first introduced.

I wonder if they measured incorrectly and I actually have a 4.4 cu. ft. tub, or if something has actually been altered?

OK, back to coffee....I'm going through a period where I've cut coffee from my morning routine, but Eight O'Clock is a favorite

I saw a consumer news story last night rating coffee makers. Consumer Reports gave the Cooks brand from JC Penney the best marks. The best coffee award went to Eight O'Clock Columbian.

I've seen the Eight O'clock in the store before but I've never tried it. The last can of coffee that I bought was Hy-Vee brand. Albert will only drink Folgers dark roast, but he sure drank the heck out of my Hy-Vee coffee the last time he was here.

Money has been pretty tight since we moved into the new house, and I really miss the flavored coffees from Gevalia.

Coming Soon - New Look, Same Great Taste

I buy Eight O'Clock coffee, and so I have received a few of those coupons that get printed at the checkouts for it. On the most recent ones, they have a prominent message: "Coming Soon - New Look, Same Great Taste". A new-style bag is shown, mostly white, different in appearance from the current bag. All the bags on the shelf are still the old style. Maybe the line was sold again and the new owner wishes to establish his presence.

A&P

We had a store not too far away and we shopped there regularly. I always loved going to smell the coffees being ground and became an advocate for the full line of 8'o clock coffees (Bokar,Red Circle and 8'o clock) for decades. I'd buy it by the case and give it out for the holidays. When I moved here and couldn't find it anywhere, I went on line only to find out they do not ship out to Hawaii or Alaska!!!!!!!!I have to drink the locally grown Kona coffee which isn't too bad, just a bit more bitter than I was used to.Not any less expensive at the store but,we have connections with some of the growers and pickers who always trade us coffee for gas.The cup I am drinking now came from a local grower who supplies the Hawaiian Isles Kona Coffee Company with their beans.I still miss my daily pot of 8'o clock coffee.

Chock Full O' Nuts.

Back when we still had a K-Mart in Wausau they used to have CFON coffee all the time. Now that they've pulled up stakes in town it is NLA in our vicinity. Sure, I could buy it online, but I don't need it that bad.

I had the same experience with Maxwell House. Same container, but when I first opened it I could not put my 2/3c. measure in it. Then a few months back I opened a can and was easily able to drop the measure in! Checked and it went from 36 oz to 32.5oz. Rip off. Just raise the price and be done with it. If anything doing this make me MORE angry than a regular price increase, they think I'm too stupid to notice.

Ice cream is another one where the containers keep getting smaller. The old 2 qt & 2liter containers are now down to 1.89 and 1.66 size now.
Worse is, at least here in Canada, some brands like Breyers are not even labelled "Ice cream" anymore.. they've changed it to "frozen dessert" because legally they cannot call it "ice cream" if it doesn't contain a minimum amount of real dairy cream. You'd never know if you didn't look and they've kept the package much the same looking. They still sell their high priced stuff as ice cream

Bokar Blend

is my flavor of choice. While the original, red bag is good, it lacks the robust flavor I prefer in my coffee. No bitterness, or after taste. Just good, full bodied, robust coffee!
I'll still buy it regardless.

Trivia

Is there anyone else (besides myself) who remembers when coffee came in 1 lb. and 3 lb. cans for a MODERATE price? Was it really that long ago?

(sigh) Oh, for the good old days... ;)

Hey Toploader... ME TOO!

I too grind my Eight-O-Clock every morning in my KitchenAid grinder. Truly the best grinder to date.
I actually have TWO KitchenAid grinders. One is vintage and always works perfectly. The other is a repro whose motor governor sometimes goes wacko and blasts coffee grounds at you at 1000mph.
My friend Scott went through two of them (Whirlpool replaced one) but they both were afflicted too. I'm keeping mine until it dies and then save the jar and accessories as they do interchange new-old.
NO, I won't give up my 8-O-Clock. I tried it after Clark Weber was advertising it in Chicago. He seemed sooo convincing that the coffee was the best. I tried it and became addicted. Thankfully, it is my only vice. :)

Also noticed the same quantity reduction on Hellman's or Best Foods Mayonnaise. The 32 ounce jar is now 30 ounces and sells for the same price. And why is mayonnaise almost $5.00 for a 30 ounce jar anyway?

Update

Noticed last night at the shops, that the small 12 ounce bags of Eight 0'Clock coffee are now 11 ounces, again for the same (or more)price.

Totally forgot that once A&P sold off the brand one could find this coffee at any store. Local Shoprite stores also have 8 0'C coffee as well.

Mayonnaise is a simple emlusion of mainly eggs and oil, simple enough to make if one has a food processor, blender or even good mixer. Failing this one just waits for sales and stocks up. Then there is always Costco!
