We have a American Standard 16 5 ton heat pump that was installed in Sept of 2010.It is a matched system and everything and has
been working great.I have noticed that in the last month it has had a problem heating the house. This system is over-sized now
we were planing on adding a new room but my Mom got Cancer and passed away so that is not going to happen now.The system
is not over-sized that much probably 3/4 ton but it being a dual stage compressor and air handler is not that much of a problem
compared to single stage systems.I have noticed that it has been using high speed alot something that would never happen unless it
was defrosting or below 20.I have now being seeing it the Aux heat at 34 degrees and still running on high.
I called our Hvac folks and they told me that besides the coil witch was really dirty the defrost board, the filter dryer is clogged up and
our T.E.V. is not working right. The T.E.V. valve on mine is electric on both the Air handler and Heat pump they told me that they
don't use these on the 16 anymore just the twin compressor now.He pointed out that the Capillary tubes are froze up after the Tev
valve and I told him they have always done that sense that first winter and he said that was real bad.He did not go into detail but
they cleaned the coil and they have to put in a new defrost board,T,E,V, reverse Valve, and filter and may even replace the unit.
He did tell me that the Tev valve will only open a little over half way and he was worried about the compressor and asked about our
power bills which has been high.He is talking about replacing the unit we have a 10 year parts and labor warranty but I don't
understand why they would replace the unit. They are great people this dealer and our friends with all my family.I have always
cleaned the coils in my A/c systems but I have never had a Trane and the spine fin coils looked clean but the dirt that came
off that was unreal they told me that sense this unit has two rows of coils in this one it's the inner one that was dirty.I just wonder
why they are talking about replacing the unit? Our power bills have been really high for a house that has new windows and tons
of insulation. This past month it was 410 bucks which is nuts and is the highest it's ever been. They only billed me for a 150 bucks
and they rolled that in with a twice yearly checkup and cleaning anything else they do is covered by the warranty.
He asked me if I would be interested to get the twin compressor heat pump if they replace it they have one that is dented on the
top but works fine.He said they would just use our top sense there the same size. That unit has two recip compressors in it one 2.5
and the other is a 5 ton. They told me that it would be less over-sized but I have heard that the Trane recip compressors are
not that great for heat pumps..I really think they are going to replace it but, I was wondering is this normal if there are a bunch
of things wrong with it?Also should I take 2012 Heritage 20 Heat pump they are not going to charge me $$ for it he showed me
pics of it and the dent is on the top fan and that is it and I get a new 10 year warranty for parts and labor. Why does people
say that Trane Heat pumps are weak on heat and it is worse with the recip compressors.
