Hi, everyone. :-)

I hope I have put this in the right place, but I thought I should say hello. :-)

My name is Carl, and I am from the UK. I have a great interest in pre-Indesit Hotpoint appliances, particularly washing machines and especially the Microtronic washing machine we had, as well as Zanussi washing machines. I have developed an interest in Miele appliances, especially after recently purchasing a Miele washing machine. Mmm… :-)

I must say hello to nickuk, who suggested I sign up here. :-) I sent a message to him on YouTube after watching his great videos, and he is probably still nursing a headache after the rather large message I sent him detailing my anecdotes of Hotpoint Microtronic washing machines! :-)

I will leave it there for now, but I will say well done to those whose aim it is to preserve what are in fact pieces of history. I love history. Some may laugh and some may think we are strange. Let them. Each to their own – enjoy what you like. At least you can say you know how to use domestic appliances. 99% of men most likely cannot use a washing machine – but you can! :-) (Apologies to any ladies here! :-))

I’ll try to go through them all and respond to each point:

To everyone who said hello: Hello, and thanks for your messages. :-) I won’t say much more because I have a terrible habit of turning messages – e-mails normally – into rather large essays! ;-) That is what the “e” stands for on “e-mail” in my case – essay-mails!!! ;-)

To aquarius1984: Poor Hotpoint – ruined! Made in UK, yes – but parts assembled elsewhere and inferior in quality terms compared with Hotpoints of just a few years ago. Such a shame. Pity those poor people who involved in assembling theses machines. I bet they have some tales to tell.

To nickuk: Glad you don’t have a headache… any more. ;-) Thanks again for the reply and information on Zanussi, etc. Your videos were instrumental in finally deciding on which new machine to buy.

Finally, a quick question for you UK users: do you find Ariel tablets are difficult to rinse out in your machines?

We’ve used UK Persil since the day time began (LOL), but we have tried Ariel and found it foams up terribly, even with just one tablet. We’re switching back to UK Ariel because of this, although we have suspected for years – hence the use of Persil for so long – that Ariel can aggravate sensitive skin. Despite Ariel Sensitive, I am not convinced that Ariel rinses out well, which is just daft. I know Ariel is said to be more effective than Persil, but this is of little use if the stuff won’t rinse out at the end. We do not use conditioner in every load, so it is not the foam from that which is visible during the last rinse.

Anyway, thanks for reading. :-) This message has grown, like I said it would! LOL

Ariel vs Persil

I've found that both seem to perform as well as each other although Persil, at least to my eye, seems to get whites whiter, perhaps more optical brighteners or whatever. I think that Persil is generally a better quality detergent - a nice light free flowing powder that refuses to clump even in the dampest of places (P&G powders I find are bad for clumping); rinse out tremendously and seem to perform as good if not better than the Ariel on a short wash (even though Ariel is supposed to have a quick wash formula). However in terms of liquids I find that Ariel liquids are superb to Persil liquids, although mum is using Persil Non Bio liquid at the moment and it smells great - just like 1980's Persil!

Ariel tabs often get sudsy in the wash for me but they seem to rinse out OK, not as good as the Ariel liquid though. I find that Ariel liquid tends to be the best out of the Ariel range for rinsing.

For what it's worth, both my dad and sister have quite bad eczema and my dad also has dermatitis, and though mum (read, I) chops and changes from Ariel to Fairy to Persil non bios, haven't had any rashes from those 2 with the skin problems at all. In fact in this Miele I'm able to use biological detergents and still not have skin complaints, whereas with the old Bosch if you used even the tiniest amount of bio detergent it would make my dad and sister itch like crazy.

Foam in the last rinse isn't really an indicator on rinsing performance, as water softening surfacants such as zeolites don't rinse out at all and can cause the water to foam even if there is no detergent left. As long as the rinse water is crystal clear (which it always is for me), then the load is sufficiently rinsed.

In conclusion though I still think Persil is probably the best washing powder available today (despite it's awful reformulation it had for 2 or 3 months in the middle of 2005) and really is underadvertised by manufacturers. Though I think it is a credit to Persil that they sell so much (they have more shelf space than Ariel in supermarkets round here) even though they only rely on TV advertising, and not manufacturer recommendations which is something that Ariel is pretty heavy on.

This site will fill up plenty of spaces of odds-and-ends time. Periodically, some of the club members will have you rolling on the floor laughing, and just when you think the thread is starting to wind down, someone else will pop in a response that's even funnier than anything before it. I've met many really nice, wonderful and interesting people here. We're all very grateful to the webmaster, Robert Seger, for bringing us together.

Hint: just don't say anything negative about Whirlpool appliances. Always starts a firestorm. But if you want to see who you can get started, then have at it.
 
Funny you should mention . . .

The Ariel vs. Persil debate!

First of all, Welcome Carl from the Lone Star State across the pond!

I was just discussing with Jon over instant messenger about how I belive that UK Persil rinses out MUCH better than Areil. I believe that UK Persil even rinses out better than German Persil (and I love German Persil)!

Last year I ordered a lot of Persil tabs, and a huge box of Persil Bio powder. I love the tabs, but I hesitated to use the powder for so long because Jon said it didn't clean as well. Well, I finally got up the gumption to try it out, and I love the stuff. The Persil Bio powder (even the 'bad' batch that I have from 2005) rinses out so well that my towels have never been softer!

Though I really like the scent of Ariel, I believe that the Persil not only rinses better, but whitens better as well. Maybe it's due to the fact that Ariel leaves excessive detergent residue from a lack of proper rinsing?

Anyway, onto another rant. It looks like you boys from the UK are outnumbering even our large Texas contingent! Sounds like y'all need to plan a UK wash-in! I hope I get an invite to that one! If so, I'll be bringing Tide, Downy and Froot Loops for all!
