Hello all,

I'm flying to New York for Christmas and new year. I'm looking to purchase and bring back to England some detergents. We're staying at 145 West 44th Street, New York, NY 10036, How easy is it going to be to find supermarkets or shops that sell detergent or am I going to have to travel to get some ? If so any pointers where to go ?

Thank you in advance.

Hello Luv!

You are staying in Hell's Kitchen and all you are worried about is buying laundry detergents? *LOL*

There is a huge supermarket (was Food Emporium but by now should be Key Food) at 452 W 43rd St (btw 9th & 10th Avenues).

You can also try Duane Reade at 43rd Street and 9th Avenue.

If you *really * want to put your skates on go down to the East Village and roam about Kmart on Astor Place: http://www.yelp.com/biz/k-mart-new-york

Detergent/laundry/cleaning supplies are on the lower level (same as subway) and is quite vast and inclusive. Far more stock than you'll find at most Manhattan supermarkets and better prices as well. While you are there might as well take in the whole place for inexpensive things you might want for yourself or gifts. When done (or before) you can either explore the East or West Village; or do both.

From where you are staying the easiest way to get down to the West Village is walk one block west to Seventh Avenue, then few blocks south to 42nd Street and take the "1" (One) local train to Christopher Street. Getting off there walk east along Christopher towards Sixth Avenue. 8th Street is a kitty corner right as you cross the avenue. Then keep walking east along 8th Street until you get to Astor Place and Kmart. It is one block east of Broadway on the North side of the street across from a Starbucks. It isn't that long of a walk and you'll probably enjoy much of it. If you take this route you will pass the *historic" Stonewall bar and see some sights of the West Village. It isn't what it once was as like much else in Manhattan high rents have chased many away but still fun.

There is really much to see and do in the area from 14th Street/Union Square down to 8th street. Truth to tell really beyond but don't want to get you lost. However it is a fun place to wonder about. If you have your phone with any good GPS/map you'll be fine.

In general supermarkets here don't have the best prices for laundry products unless they are on sale. Kmart is more of a discount place so their prices often are better. Duane Reade, Rite Aid, Walgreen's and a few others are sort of hybrid chemists and grocery stores. Sometimes their prices are lower than supermarkets, others not.

If you can find a Rite Aide store they most always have Tide detergent on sale at least every other week. It may be only the liquids though which would cause problems getting back through customs. The pods I don't know if would pass muster either.

You can try the following:

Kmart

One Penn Plaza

250 W 34th St

(212) 760-1188

Open until 11:00 PM

Target

East River Plaza

517 E 117th St #201

(212) 835-0860

Open until 12:00 AM

The Home Depot

40 W 23rd St

(212) 929-9571

Open until 9:00 PM

You can also try the dollar stores, they sometimes carry "off" brands. The best would be Jack's :

110 W. 32nd Street
New York, NY 10001
Monday-Friday: 7:30am-8:45pm
Saturday: 10:00am-8:45pm
Sunday: 10:00am-7:45pm

They have two other locations, but this one would be the closest to you. Bare in mind that being in Manhattan the variety will be less and prices higher than in other boroughs of the city. Good luck and enjoy your stay!

Thank you for the prompt reply

Hello Launderess and ultramatic

Thank you to the both of you for prompt reply, I have got the other half looking in to this and get them put on the map when we're out and about. I'm looking to bring back some pods and put them in the suitcases to bring back. I really want to try them out in the Miele. When we went to Orlando I ended up bringing back some gain liquid in the suitcase with no problems. We have alsorts planned for when we visit so it's going to be a full on trip ☺️ But secretly I'm more excited about visiting the detergent section (kid in a sweet shop comes to mind) but I won't let on to him I'm less excited than what he is 😂. I'd really like some wisk liquid so fingers crossed I can find some on my travels.

Thank you again for the heads up I appreciate it 😊

If it is Tide, Gain or other P&G detergents you are after

Especially pods check out Rite Aid (see link for Yelp information about the one near your hotel)as Tide and or Gain are on sale often there. Usually liquids and PODS but sometimes powder as well.

Prices for laundry products in NYC can vary widely between different shops. On sale or normal prices can vary by several USD so it pays to shop around. Unless you spot a deal that is really far from your hotel in a place you aren't likely to return during your visit be cool about it first. Scope out prices at a few places and make notes. Unless there is a special on it is highly unlikely a particular version of detergent or whatever will run out in the few days you are here.

Selection wise find the K-Mart shops have the most extensive range. The detergent section at the Astor Place store is about two long aisles and several shelves high. They stock hard to find products like Purex "Power Shot" that have rarely come across elsewhere in Manhattan.

Launderess, about those Purex power Shots..I've seen them around but figured they were a waste of $$ . Have you ever used them or know what their performance is like? Thank You Cheryl

I would second the Target on 117th St, my primary source of household items.
Take 2 train to 116 St, transfer to M116 bus heading east that would take you to 1st Ave.

You can download their Cartwheel app and get discounts, they currently have 10% off on Honest detergent, 5% off on Tide and Gain pods, Purex, Woolite, some in-wash crystals etc etc.

Whole aisle dedicated to variety of Tide, they probably have each and every Tide available, decent selection of Tide and Gain powders, Foca, and another aisle of pods.

Natural detergents are separate aisle, if you're interested. Am currently testing Seventh Generation Ultra Power Plus and it seems to do a very decent job.

Wonderful time to be in NY...

make sure to take in all the super Holiday window displays on 5th Ave &c. Our favorite NYC hotel is in the same general area, Ink48 (part of Kimpton Hotels) at 48th and 11th, highly recommended.

AS far as detergent finding, WalMarts in Peoria &c are probably the most fruitful LOL
