How the K%#(DFMSP#(#*%U!! does one loosen the tub nut on a Maytag? Is there some trick I need to know other than placing the spanner wrench over the thing and whacking it with a hammer? Is there a pin or something that has to be removed first? I DON'T want to damage the gorgeous blue tub on this A106 I just bought but it's being very uncooperative. I poured boiling water over it, I scraped off all the calc, but the thing wont budge.

Tub nut on a Maytag is REVERSE threads. You loosen it by turning it CLOCKWISE. In many cases it still wont budge, in which case it has to be broken off with a chisel.

FilterFlo is absolutely corect. The tub nut is left hand threads which loosens by turning to the right. I had the same problem with my A206. No amount of penetrating oil would loosen it. Eventually had to had a very sharp chisel and break it in half to get it removed. These are still available through Repairclinic.com.......

Hard work often makes repairs seem easy.........

Ive lost count on how many of those Maytags Ive repaired thru the years, especially in my days as a repairman. A good Maytag repair book can guide a novice thru the center tub nut and tub removal and also the center seal replacement.
A good Maytag manual is a must for the novice........they are pretty easy to find........
