Help. Maytag

I have the opportunity to get my hands on a maytag I believe a107 or a108. center dial with the "automatic" button to the right of the dial.

The washer has been owned by an older single woman in her 70's. I'm assuming she didn't do that much laundry and the use on the machine is minimal. The tub in the washer is small not the large capacity. I have a family of 4 and do between 8-10 loads of laundry a week currently in our year old ge top loader. my question is do you feel that the machine will hold up for a while. Having both washers in the house is out of the question, it will either be this maytag or, just forget about it and stick with the ge. Any help and or advise would be appreciated. Thank you.

will it hold up, certainly! does it hold a lot of clothes?... this machine can hold about 6 large bath towels.

You'll be doing a lot more laundry,but there should be no doubts about the Maytag holding up.

As said above, the Maytag holds less clothes but would more than likely hold up just fine.

In case it's a issue, the GE uses more water per lb. of clothes since the outer tub is so much bigger than the inner tub. This Maytag uses 34 gallons per load. Also this is a 1 speed machine, there is no slow speed for delicates.

Old Maytags Rock W/O a doubt

My mother is on her SECOND Maytag in 40 years, with the first one just turning 20 very shortly. My mothers first Maytag did diapers for three kids, all of our clothes, sheets, towels. It will wash circles around the GE.They are not even in the same league.The holes on the maytag tub are also made to be more gentle. Push your finger on the hole in the platic GE and then piture your favorate sweater doing the same tihing. The old Ge's were great. The new stuff, not even close in my opinion. My 2 cents.

Get a front loader. Do you collect machines? If so, get the Maytag. If not tell us so we can send someone to rescue it.

I don't collect machines like you guys do. I just have always liked this machine since I was small. I grew up with aunts who had these machines and loved the way they sounded. I don't like front loading machines.

Those helical-drive Maytags are very solid machines. I would say go for it, as it will definitely last longer than your plastic GE!

Since it's a standard-capacity machine you won't be able to do as big of a load, but your clothes will be much cleaner and you will never experience any damaged or torn clothes like you would with the "shredder-stroke" and sharp plastic tub on the plastic GE.

Well I am seriously flirting with the idea of a center-dial Maytag to love, should one come up in white, preferably.

Why have only one machine?

a super *cave* capacity new front-loader for quick catch-ups and huge items may be just the ticket to calm you, even if front-loaders are not generally your bag.

This way the top-loader does the majority, and you may get outta the laundry room quick, when needed.

I don't know how to hook up multiple machines, i think i am going to keep my ge top loader there is nothing wrong with it at all. it does have a very big size tub, but there is something about the maytag that I like. It just sounds so much different. And how much smaller could the tub be anyway.

the design of the standard size tub dates from the late 50's. its an excellent, quality design. but i think maybe back in the late 50s folks were just glad to have an AUTOMATIC washer, and the *capacity wars* (as ive heard them called) were just beginning. what Kitchenaid is to mixers, Maytag is to 60s/70s/80s washers. the regular-size tub holds about HALF what the best super-capacity models with dual-action agitators do.
