I cannot believe it.

I am looking for a new bedspread, and I cannot find anything remotely like what I am looking for, which is:

- Full size, 96 inches by 109 inches
- Single-layer fabric, not quilted
- Machine washable
- Guy-type plaid, stripe, or geometric, predominantly blue

Now is that so hard? Well, yes, it seems to be. I am finding comforters, duvet covers, bed-in-a-bag, Battenberg lace-trimmed, Dupioni silk, Swarovski crystal-trimmed, John Deere tractor prints, NASCAR prints, Batman prints, Barbie prints, fake fur, real fur, real down, part down, not-really-down-but-we-think-it's-just-as-good, chenille, granny quilts, embroidered, 24-jillion-thread-count Unobtanium cotton, you name it.

But not a plain, serviceable, trim, guy's bedspread, suitable for a midcentury room (I have Danish furniture). I did find one great bedspread on eBay, pictured below; it was a terrific vintage block plaid in reds, blues and black. But it turned out to be smaller than the seller thought it was, so she refunded me.

Does anyone have any idea where this elusive item can be found? If I liked foofy, the world would be my oyster, but I'm about as unfoofy as they come, and that's not in style right now. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

P.S.:

None of the contemporary-themed chains like IKEA, Urban Outfitters, Crate & Barrel, etc., have anything like I want - they're all very wedded to the matched sheet and comforter idea, which I'm not looking for.

I have the same problem

I ended up making what I needed Sandy but then again I don't mind the sewing. At least it gives me exactly what I want. Still there is finding the fabric part. I would take a look at ebay and check some of the shops on cheshire bridge road. Even Tara antiques if they are still in business. I haven't been on that side of town in about a year but it's worth a look.

Danish huh, that's exactly what I would be doing if I didn't have an 18th century house. Also Forsyth Fabrics has some great materials. I always check the close out room first for deals. And the Scott Market is in town this weekend (285 and Jonesboro Road). Good Luck!

Oh yea, one more place. If you want to venture out to Gwinnett there is a shop in Buford called "Queen of Hearts"

Is there a 'textile district' in the town where you live?? If so, check out the stores that feature home decorating fabrics - they very often have individual bed linens like bed spreads, sheet sets, or comforters in solid colours. Also, try eBay - I have scored some pretty good sheet sets (600 thread count no less) there!
If you had a time machine, I would suggest Abraham & Strauss in NYC... lol

Glad I Can Sew...

...Is all I can say. I've been through every national chain's Website, including Sears, Penney's, WalMart, KMart, Target, Land's End, Orvis, The Vermont Country Store, and more and more and more.

Unless someone comes up with a breakthrough, it looks like my next stop is Hancock's. My Singer Athena 2000 is going to get a workout, I guess.

P.S.: The foofiness I've seen out there is enough to make me almost glad there's a recession. We were headed for 24K gold-edged toilet paper at the rate we were going.

Good luck Sandy. Without fou-fou, it aint' gonna be easy

Oh honey don't get me started.

The amount of money some women are willing to pay for "NESTING MATERIAL" is NASUEATING.

Bedspeads
Quilits
Sheets
Curtains (cause they have to match the carpet!)
Throw-rugs.
Towels

It s freaking square or rectangular sheet of fabric for gawd's-sake!

How are articles of clothing that requre sizes, shapes and contours less money?

Zipdang:

Nice plaid indeed, and if that was a bedspread, I'd go for the blue in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, it's available only as a comforter cover, which is exactly what I don't want. I'm looking for a plain bedspread, because it's much easier to make a bed with one of those than it is to get a bed full of "designer" pillows, comforters, and assorted frou-frou looking halfway neat.

Thanks for pointing that out - you obviously get what kind of fabric I'm looking for. Few do, trust me.

No worries, Sandy. I suspect we have similar tastes, as I have also been on an endless search for unfrilly bedding and have found very little that's simple yet tasteful. It really shouldn't be this difficult. :)

And the search continues....

Sandy,

I know exactly what you are looking for, but unfortunately I haven't a clue where to find what you want unless you buy the fabric and make your own, which would be a great project for the Athena 2000. I too am having a hard time finding a new bedspread, I have been searching for over a year and can't find anything. My bedroom suite is a 6 piece Waterfall set with matching cedar chest which is done in maple finished inlaid wood veneers, and I have a brown plush carpet and antique gold walls. I want a lighter weight bedspread, no comforter in a pattern that will go with the style furniture I have. I have found bedspreads that are of the proper weight but come in horrid pastel solid colors with no pattern. If I find a pattern I like the bedspread is too heavy or is made of jaquard or damask and is Dry Clean only which is a no no for bedding.I keep using the same ratty thread-bare bedspread because the other bedspread I have is too heavy and dry-clean only.

Good luck in your search and If I find anything around here I will let you know.

Sam

The only single-layer bedspreads I've ever found have been from hotel supply companies. They're usually horrid polyester, laced with enough fire retardants to choke a horse, and butt ugly.

Hotel Bedspreads:

I've looked at the hotel/hospital sites, and they all carry pretty much the same thing - ribcord spreads in solid colours. I really need a pattern. I bought a solid spread in navy to try out, and returned it - the need for pattern in the room was obvious, plus the navy looked so dark it was nearly black (it's a room that doesn't get much sun). All I needed in there was a few whips and chains to complete the dungeon look, LOL.

And no, that's not my thing.

Fabrics

Try getting a copy of the Atomic home,I think thats it.They have lots of ads for vintage fabrics.I know the style I had place-mats like that once.Sears used to sell that also.Ive seen it in their books.Try barnes and nobles magazines and collectable section and mid-century on E-bay.Bobby
