Hey guys! Rarely do I post that I need anything on this site and this might actually be the first time. I still have a beautiful KDS-19 Kitchenaid dishwasher sitting in my house and have not been able to use it yet. We have a really old kitchen with no way to have a built-in machine. I have been searching up and down for a portable Kitchenaid cabinet that I could install my machine in so I could actually use it. Seems now that I'm in Portland, OR they are popping up on the east coast!

Anyways, I just want to kindly ask anyone here to please keep your eyes peeled for any Kitchenaid portables in the Portland viscinity, etc. I don't care if the dishwasher works because I just want the portable cabinet.

Freestanding dishwasher cabinet

Hi Jon:

Perhaps this Ikea freestanding cabinet could be made to work - perhaps even add a base and casters. I'll bet a water feed and drain hose made for a portable dishwasher could be used as well as adding a standard grounded power cord. This would allow you to create your own portable KitchenAid.

Just a thought!

Go to someone

who is handy with woodwork and get them to knock together a base with castors. Shouldn't cost the world either. Alternatively, check Craigslist, estate sales et al for a portable vintage dishwasher in mint condition. That's what I'd be doing. You are so lucky over there with all the interesting vintage goodies that show up all over the place.

Why not get your coupler, 4 casters, and an electric cord if no youngun's or pet's are running about. Sometimes if you move ahead, you make your luck. Would another brands portable cabinet work as an interim until the KA cabinet turns up? alr2903
 
Some good ideas

Andrew, I have definitely looked into the IKEA cabinet. I actually went to the IKEA here and they told me they no longer produce the cabinet because of some problems they had with them. Not really sure what that was about but I was not able to buy one here (and they are kind of pricey).

I had also wondered if another brand cabinet would work. A part of me thinks that it could work. I mean you pretty much slap casters on the dishwasher itself where leveling legs would normally be right? Then the sides and top are simply there to cover the "innerds" of the machine to make it nice and tidy looking. I'm assuming cabinets must have some kind of counterweight in them so the machine does not tip forward when opened.

Speaking of tipping forward...that is my biggest fear with this Kitchenaid. The doors are really heavy. I recall seeing the portable KA's having an extra little leg that would extend out front when the door would open to add stability. That's the main reason why I'm hoping to find that type of cabinet.

You'd think Portland, OR of all places it wouldn't be a problem finding one of these suckers but they just aren't around here right now. I think everyone is still using theirs or something!

I appreciate the optimism and I'm sure one will surface eventually. Hopefully with all of the eyes and ears on this site it might get a little easier to find.

Hi John and DW enthusiasts

With your charm and karma, you'll do just fine. But on the subject of DW's, a while back you had a thread on a Frigidaire DW. I noticed that the control dial was similar to the dials on the washers of that period, and I got to wondering: Are the early Frigidaire DW's as cool, neat, unusual, unique as the washers were? Any stand-out features equivalent to a 3 ring agitator, etc. Do you have any knowledge about them. I have none. Have not seen even ONE in my life.

Honestly I don't have any experience whatsoever with Frigidaires other than the 1-18 I have and I don't know much about it! Patrick up here in Portland may be giving me use of his portable top-load Frigidaire dishwasher while I search for the KA parts I need. It's a beautiful avocado green color so of course I can't say no to that!

I figured in return I may part out my 1970 Kenmore 80 series washer to him so he can finish his Lady Kenmore washer. It's a great washer but man it's a mess underneath and not sure if I want to even attempt to rebuild it.

Did get the portable Frigidaire from Patrick. It's definitely not the quality of a Kitchenaid or anything but it does clean really well. This particular dishwasher had the date Nov 17, 1970 stamped on under a cabinet panel. Inside the cabinet is perfect. Amazingly no rust anywhere so it's probably hardly been used.

I actually tore into the newer Kenmore portable today to see if I could somehow put the KA in its cabinet. Unfortunately it looked like it was going to work out but it won't. The counterbalance weight on the base is in the way of the dryer fan so it was a no-go. Oh well!

I did find a portable KA in Vancouver, B.C. but that's pretty far and they want $200. I think that's way too much so I guess I'll keep looking!

So, no cool Frig. DW moves discovered yet.

Will have to keep my eyes pealed. So many Frigidaire Washers, but no Dishwashers around here. Maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but there doesn't seem to be any buzz about them the way the KA's are a veritable bee hive of buzzing.

Nice try on the Kenmore. That's the best way, Jon, and there is always hope.

Thanks! Eddy, I'll keep watching that one in Vancouver. If it lingers long enough I may call them and make a low-ball offer and see what happens. $75-$100 would be more in my playing field. Then I could strip the cabinet off and sell the dishwasher and regain some of the money back. Guess we'll see what happens. :-)

Mike, trial and error is the best way I can learn you know. I have to say that Frigidaire dishwasher that's for sale here in Portland is really nice looking. Would be a cool machine if I had a spot for a built in. Avocado always makes me melt!

The dishwasher you have is beautiful. Funny that it is exactly the same model of dishwasher I plan on putting in it! There's no way that cabinet would not work! I sincerely hope it works out so I can get that cabinet. It would seriously make me so happy! Thanks again for the pics and opportunity. Will be talking to you very soon!
