Hello everyone!

I hope someone can help me, I have a beautiful 1960s Hygena kitchen with fold out breakfast bar ect and a Lec fridge plus other 60s appliances ect that I have picked up over the years and recently a friend donated us a Servis mk30 supertwin II and not having a washing machine at all and having to use my grandparents facilities I practically snatched there hands off, as you can imagine the machine fits in perfectly with our 60s kitchen and the units being narrow compared with modern ones it fits in lovely beside the units.

The fact is the machine really needs an overhaul. It was working 3 years ago but since then its been in storage and all the rubber pipes have perished and it looks like the spin belts have gone slack. I tested the wash motor and it worked happily away as did the spin motor, and all the other moving parts moved by hand easy enough so nothing has seized up. However the casters have seized and the case needs tidying up, however under the wooden work-top the enamel looks like new, I was hoping someone could help me get the machine restored to working order? I am more then happy to use it as my main washing machine as it would make my life a heck of a lot easier ! and it fits into the kitchen perfectly. I don’t mind doing the work myself however im sure if it was in the hands of someone who knows a lot more about what they are doing it would be a better job! If anyone can help me out please do get in touch I really love the style of this machine! and dont want to have to scrap it.

Eddy

SCRAP IT.......????

You are kidding of course?
Its not so much the work as getting the parts, I have recently got mine upto working standard and its as good today as it was in 1960. Had to fit 2 pipes instead of one for the drain you just cannot get the thick 2 in 1 pipe anymore. Belts are easier to get some are on ebay and believe it or not but my spinner happily runs on a alternator belt from halfords :)

Good luck

Austin

Ps if you scrap it let us know first parts are hard to find :)

Hi Austin

Thanks for that info, I dont mind using the 2 hoses that seams simple enough, what size hoses should I be looking for? I have been trying to find a sump hose but not sure if the ones I have found would be the right size. I didn't think belts would be to much problem, I normally fix vintage radios tape player ect so this is my first go at a washer lol

Hi Eddy,
Great find..if you have any questions about the machine just ask away, i have had 3/4 of these
machines over the years. They are quite easy to work on. I have a few used spares as well.
Including a new double hose, but unfortunately that is not for sale.
Cheers
Keith

Hose sizes....

Hi Eddy I just got a pair of hoses from the diy store and then cut them as too long they work fine. Unable to reccomend a sump hose as never had to replace one is it leaking?

I put a new spinner bearing in that was fun but well worth it :)

Hi Keith

Thanks im sure i will have lots of questions yet to come but for now... what size hoses do i need to get for the wash and spin pumps ? I assume i can just connect straight onto the pump and go out back to go over the sink?

Hi Keith

Yes the sump hose is perished and leaking, if you squash any of the old rubber hoses they just crack and split. I think it was used 3 years ago then put outside not being drained totally and being stored outside in a shed in the cold its taken it toll.

Diameter size for the wash pump and spin pump hoses im looking for, they are the same size i can see i can cut the length down to size easy enough

Hello again

Just wanted to show some photos of the machine and kitchen, the handy thing for me at the moment is even thou the machine isnt working its very handy work top space!

OK well I have ordered a sump hose from a place called easyspares which claims to fit MK30 so fingers crossed, im just looking for the 2 hoses from both pumps now, and also a user manual would be helpful if anyone has a copy they could email to me? any literature on my model would be great. I have been re coating the machine today and will put up some photos tomorrow of it. Thanks for all your help so far its making getting her going again much more easier then i imagined!

Retro Kitchen

Welcome Eddy, glad you found the Dark Side of appliance collecting & restoration, you`ll get lots of info and help just keep asking, love the kitchen pics, As said the hoses inside can be mocked up from car spares or are even available on some sites like you have found, the only obsolete part is the TwinLine hose...you can use two Hotpoint spinner hoses or two later Servis twinny hoses (Spin Part, model 100 / 111 etc)

let us know how you get on, would love to see inside pics when you are ready!!

Cheers, Mike

I do adore your kitchen - it transported me back to my childhood - the sink inparticular, except the taps. The twin tub, which was used as an extension to the worktops! That is the same Kenwood Chef my mother had all of her married life.

ok before and after! Thanks for all your kind comments everyone! I get a lot of comments about the kitchen either people love it or hate it, It came out of a 1960s bungalow and was original to the house from new(one owner since new) so is only secondhand! I needed a kitchen for the house and the chap was going to smash it up and put it in the skip, so I paid him £30 for it. I still need to finish off some tiles behind the washer and a few little odds an ends, The kitchen is so well made and in amazing condition, the idea after we got the kitchen was to just make everything look like its always been there since the 60s, so I have resisted the temptation to refinish everything like new. I have to have a twin tub as the units are much narrower then todays so a new front loader in this kitchen would look awful!!
The extra work top space its fantastic as the kitchen didn't have any corner units with it so its perfect for the gap i have. Thanks for the image Mike, I have framed vintage adds of the things I have around the kitchen, I shall have to print it out and put it with my LEC fridge advert.

I will keep you posed about progress, i have to get the thing watertight yet!

Eddy
