Hey - I can't BELIEVE this is so difficult. Bought my Whirlpool side x side in March. The filter light alters me to get a new filter. Looking up my model # online, my literature here and I still can't figure out if the filter for my fridge is style 1 or style 2. The manual says there are 2 possible filters for my model but it doesn't freaking specify which ONE!!! Why? So annoying. It shows picture examples of opening the filter access door in the grill for "both style 1 and 2"
So it's either one of these filters
EDR1RXD1
OR
EDR2RXD1

Does anyone know which of these I need to buy? My fridge's exact model # is WRS325SDHW00
Thanks :)

Mark, If the

filter pops out when you pull the filter cover door open---it is Filter #1. EDR1RXD1. The filter has an exposed inlet and outlet stud with visible "O" rings.

*If when you open the filter cover door, there is a cap that requires a 90 degree counter-clockwise turn to release and remove the filter, that is Filter #2. EDR2RXD1. This filter has an oval rim around the inlet and outlet. Also requires
you to transfer the cap to the new filter.

Hope this helps.

L.P.

If only it were that easy.  The filter on our 2009 KA fridge is the type mentioned above that twists out.  Since 2009, the available filters have changed from Whirlpool brand to another brand and yet another brand.  None have cross references.

If you want to be sure, remove the filter and bring it to the store with you to match it up.  No need to shut off the water supply.

I got into the habit of saving the information on the box from the new filter so I'd know the item/part number, but since the brands keep changing, that practice doesn't help anymore.

OK

When I first got this fridge, I think I recall opening the filter door because it was a new fridge and I think I remember the filter slightly popping out. It says when the light is RED change filter. My old wp fridge the light would come on right at the 6-month mark. But this has only been five months. I can't get over how EXPENSIVE these filters are. Since this is the first change, I wasn't sure which filter style. Once I know it will be no problem.

So - if I open door can I pop filter out and look at it to see exactly which kind it is, then reinstall the old filter while waiting for the new filter to arrive? I just don't want to screw something up.

I don't change my filter every six months.  I reset the filter button for another six months.  I usually don't let it go for more than a year without changing it, but with just two of us we don't go through enough water to require replacement after only six months.

Some people even change them less frequently than that.

Note;

There may be two filter numbers. One which only removes bad tastes from tap water, and another which removes more minerals and spores. Higher price point also.

Also note; GE refrigerators do bot die before filters need changing.
My neighbors Frigidaire was a late model, still looked like new when the unit died.
The board had already been replaced, so they decided not to spend another $550-$600 on a repair.
They got a Samsung for upstairs, which the salesman told them to expect 8 years, then it will die.
They also got a new slate color GE for their basement kitchen. The GE Artica they had down there still worked, but was icing up the freezer back wall after about 2 months use once they allowed it to though out. So they donated it.
There is always an exception to a rule or period of appliance longevity, however, GE has not changed their compressor design in many years, aside form a rolled coil condenser, plus all the electronics. Ours is now going on 12 years knock wood.

I took it out

It IS filter 1 (with the two edges at the end) and I stuck it back in. It was tricky because when you close the door, you feel like you're forcing something that's gonna break even though it's lined up correctly, but then the door snaps shut. I came this close to ordering filter 2! So glad I checked. Now I'm not sure if I'm going to be ordering the generic ones or the whirlpool ones. Those generics make me nervous on Amazon..... Especially since some of them don't have reviews and the ones that do have reviews I'm guessing are fake Chinese reviewers by the way they use English words in their reviews, "like this filter uses much best drinking water."

Even still, the WP one claims to be superior. I wonder if it's made in China as well? I'm sure all the generics are.

I get filters from FiltersFast.com.  Typically generic for my GE SxS.  Supposed to change every 6 mos but the indicator light comes on at 12 mos.  Filters are akin to inkjet cartridges ... buy the printer for $40, spend $60 every time ink runs out.

I have a bypass cap for the GE (haven't used it) but I don't think WP provides such.

Even at 20.00 I find them pricey....but the best prices so far can be found on ebay….

I find these types of filtering senseless.....if its not reverse osmosis, what good is it really doing....

better to take it out, and leave it out.....the last two fridges didn't have a filter, no reason to have one now....

we grew up drinking water out of the garden hose, did it really harm us....

your choice, that's just my take on them....

These filters are mainly charcoal, but since water in our area is predominantly groundwater and is treated with chlorine, there is a pronounced difference between a glass of tap water and filtered water when placed side by side.  The filter gets rid of the chlorine smell and overall improves the taste.

I use the filtered stuff for drinking, making coffee, and making ice.  Other than that, I use water from the tap.

Also, on Whirlpool makes, you can remove the filter entirely and the ice maker and water dispenser will still work without the need for installing a bypass.

yes

to me, there's a noticeable difference in taste so the filter is doing something. Obviously not reverse osmosis but better than drinking from the tap.

One thing I've always wondered about when they say changed every six months is the flow rate. I've never EVER noticed a decrease in the flow rate even after the filter is 6 mos old. I've read reviews where people say there's start getting slower and they have to change it before the 6 mos is up. Like right now with this old filter that says it needs changing, the flow coming out of the dispenser is as strong as it was day 1.

I think the flow rate slows down -- if it does -- so slowly that you don't notice it.  I don't know if I'm convincing myself that it has slowed down or not, as I only notice (or imagine it) when I'm filling the coffee carafe, but of course the replacement indicator light has suggestive powers that contribute to my speculation.

I think the best way to test is to fill a glass halfway with tap water, and another halfway with dispenser water.  Get your nose in there and smell both.  Taste both too, if the smell test wasn't enough.  If there's little or no difference, it's time for a new filter.

Changing your filter every 6 months is just donating money. I change mine about every 2 years or so. I use the water dispenser multiple (a lot) times per day and will typically empty the (very small) ice bin every day by dinner time.

The only time you should change it is if:

You notice a decrease in water flow (ie the filter is clogging)
The fridge is unplugged for longer than 1 week

Bear in mind I’m dealing with 100% city customers that get municipal water.

ebay is your friend

I change mine once a year...but...my water is already filtered when it gets to the fridge filter (it's tied into the under-sink filter line).

My fridge uses the filter that's down in the bottom grill under the freezer.  I get them on ebay too...genuine WP filters much cheaper than anywhere else.  My flow does not decrease either.

OMG! Those are OEM filters too...At least I'm guessing they are because they have the KENMORE name on them. Anway, I booked mark that. I hope it's still there next time I need a filter. I swear I looked on EBAY and didn't see that.
