I just finished installing the new transmission in the KA washer. However, I cannot get the agitator to turn with my hand-- Its almost like it frozen. Is this normal? I'm afraid to hook the machine back up as I'm afraid I'll break something. I'll keep researching and see if I can find some answers. I did make sure the clutch spring was opposite the Brake spring-- not sure if something is wrong there or not.

It's possible that the transmission is engaged at the moment. If you shut the machine off while it's agitating, you can't move the agitator. Only when the motor reverses and the machine shifts into drain or spin mode will the agitator move freely. Try turning the transmission shaft by hand to see if you can get it to agitate and then turn it the other way to disengage the transmission from the agitator.

I took the old gearcase out and put the new one in-- I could get the agitator to barely move with a lot of force-- maybe the new transmission has to be run to loosen it up. I just don't want to tear anything up. I didn't think to see if I could turn the shaft on the transmission before I installed it. I pulled the agitator again and you can't turn the piect of the shaft that sticks out of the tube at all[this post was last edited: 4/4/2013-21:46]

Here's an idea
When you reattach the motor, leave the pump off temporarily and turn the motor shaft counterclockwise by hand. If you see the agitator move with your turns, you should be fine.

Drill Adaptor
I tested my last DD transmission with a drill before I installed it. If you use a 1/2 Inch drill drive adaptor, it fits well enough into the drive coupler that you can use a drill to turn it. It's much easier than turning by hand and allows you to easily test both agitate and spin thoroughly before installation.

The gearcase must be in spin mode in order for the agitator shaft to freely rotate. In agitate mode, the agitate gear is engaged and you are trying to rotate against a 9.58 to 1 gear ratio that is a worm gear arrangement. Nearly impossible to do. You may have to rotate the input shaft up to nearly 10 times to get it to shift and disengage the agitate gear.

Got it finished
I thought a new gearcase would make this washer a bit quieter, but I swear after a few loads it might be slightly less noisy. It did some kind of clicking like it wasn't going to spin but then took off. Time to call George the Repairman and let him take care of it. Much less frustration.

I knew your tranny was not bad. That rarely happens in Whirlpool machines. Not sure why it did not go into spin right away. Bad Capacitor?

It's working fine now It just did that clicky thing one time. It sure doesn not clunk and sound like it hitting something like the old one. I was just glad I could actually do it. I did put a slight dent in the porcelain tub by dropping the socket wrench-- just my luck. And after 2 or 3 loads it looks like a little rust is already starting. I'll try some enamel touch up paint used for bathtubs and see how that works. I sure appreciate everyones comments and help. I enjoy reading all the posts on here. I've learned a lot.
