this is one of the Maytag GASOLINE ENGINES used on washers & other uses ,was called "the multi motor" this is the model 92 I own 3 of them,the company made thousands of them,
they sat under the wringer tub as you can see theres a kick pedal to start it,kinda like a motorcycle,you mixed gas and oil filled the tank(that is in the base) opened the fuel valve choked it (putting your hand over the intake) you were ready for work!!!!!!!

Mom says

Their multi-motor KNEW when grandpa took the tractor out to the field and the minute he started working...it would die and they couldn't get it started. Mom would have to go out to the field to get him and he'd come back and get it started and running and the minute he hit the end of their 1/2 mile drive...it would die again!

she needed more education on how it worked so she can keep it going,yes the=ose engines can be fussy ,good hot spark ,clean plug & most important fresh gas& oil mix

My dad told me a story about one of these motors when he was a boy-took it out of the washer and put it on a go-kart.When the folks found out-he had to put it back and a session behind the barn for him!

My grandmother told me that they had a motor like this one, which ran her wooden double tub Dexter. She said it was hard to start and grandpa had to come in from the fields to keep it going. It backfired one day and set fire to the side porch. The fire was put out quickly with pails of milk or the entire house would have gone up in flames. Ah, the good ole days. Happy washing. Gary

I've only heard of the gasoline powered washers...how loud is it when it's in operation? My grandmother washed on a scrub board prior to getting electricity..an aunt had maytag wringer that was electirc...she kept it covered in plastic...after TVA got electricity to my grandmother..she and her sister shared an Easy...now that was the deal.

there are many farms without electricity that used gasoline powered machines of all types ,many amish farms use gasoline powered washers to this day ,there are shops that buy old wringers & refurbish them ,and convert to non electric use,some use a horse driven shaft & pully system to power their washers & other appliances
