Automatic Washer - The world's coolest Washing Machines, Dryers and Dishwashers

Large capacity solid tub, lighted panels. Electric bleach dispenser and agitator mounted softener dispenser. This has an infinte water level control that is pressure activated. There is a small hose that comes off the fill flume that diverts water into a small tank in the back-right corner of the washer cabinet. When the tank reaches the proper level selected on the dial ("Relatively narrow range of fill levels" CR said) the machine advances into wash. During the pause between agitate and spin, there is a solenoid that opens a valve in the tank and it dumps the water into the outer tub to be pumped away. It's a very cool sound to hear - audio drama!

I found this same washer, in almond, at a thrift store - one of the first vintage washers I found. It was a nasty mess, but I cleaned and cleaned, replaced a couple of minor parts and washed like crazy. My machine had a record of it's service written with a marker on the outer tub of the machine inside the front panel. Nearly every part appeared to have been replaced at least once and the washer required so much service that they continued the notes from the tub onto the inside of the front panel. Somebody must have really liked this last solid tub washer from Speed Queen, they poured a lot of money into it before finally giving up. To it's credit though, it was 20 years old when I found it. The last of the solid tub Speed Queens were pretty bad in overall quality - most didn't make it more than five years or so.

This was the set my mom bought in late 1978, hers were yellow. I don't know if she was "cursed" or what. My parents had a new house built in 1978 and we moved in in time for my 13th birthday 2/79. It seems she had issues with ALL the appliances which were purchased new. That Speed Queen set would break on the average of twice a year. Many pumps and leaks on that washer, and the dryer would squeel and rumble. That set was shot when they sold the house 5 years later.
As for the other appliances... the Amana double oven wasn't bad, but the corning top was. The Amana Fridge had 3 repairs within the first few years, altho mom still has that fridge and it keeps humming away. The Maytag dishwasher was pretty bad. Even the central air (Fedders) in that house blew a compressor the 2nd year.
