Hi New (from CT) wanting to buy an old Washer/Dryer

Hi from Connecticut! I love this forum, as I love old home "stuff". I have a 1938 Chambers stove, a few old sewing machines, and awesome old fans. The way I found you was my new fridge needed a drain ($200). I got talking to the repair man because I need a new washer and dryer too. He told me how he still works on the older ones and he said you can still find parts for them. So I have a few questions I'm hoping someone can help me with.

1. I have no more than 56-1/2" for a washer and dryer. Will older models will be able to fit in those dimensions?

2. Since I don't work on older machines, what should I look for when buying one?

3. Can you recommended any models that are exceptionally built and (generally speaking) need little repair?

4. What years are best for what models? I'm not picky on the year.

5. Any ideas of where to find them?

I do love those lovely colors of Maytag pink and turquoise with the lights, but don't think I'll ever find them. Even a white one of those are awesome.

I do want to be able to put my queen down comforter in the washing machine and I am NOT interested in wringers.

If having room for a queen sized comforter is a requirement, you can forget a lot of older machines, as the capacity is too small.
A few that will are a Maytag 606, 806, or a Norge 20 pounder. A large capacity Whirly or Kenmore.
There is currently a Kenmore set over in Shopper's Square----- "Dual Action on the Prarie" When it comes to a great old set those will be hard to beat.

I have no problem getting a queen size comforter into my modern Speed Queen Top Loader although traditionally, a front loader is better at handling bulky items

You can have a modern machine painted pink or turquoise.

I have a 19YO front load set. Maytag Neptunes model MAH4000AWW, perfect shape and working order. Panama City Florida

Hi Judy,

Welcome!!  You should be able to see shopper's square at the top of this page.  It's the purple link.  I think you can access it even if an unpaid member account.  I logged out and was still able to get to it.  You'll get much good advice here.  I can't help you much as I'm a front loader guy tried and true.
