I'd say this whole deal is IMMENSELY funnier when it is understood from THEIR cutltural context. It can be said that the Japanese, as a group, (don't you hate those gross generalities?) are EXTREMELY hung-up on #2.

I admit I was laughing too....
Correction: I was laughing so hard I thought my sides were going to burst.
But I started to think how funny it is for the one being played the prank? I know for one, if I'm doing #2 I would be mortified if someone in the next room could hear me... let alone see me.
I like a good laugh and I've done pranks on people that well, are best left to another thread (and to an entirely different venue), but really thinking about it, I don't quite see the humor in humiliating someone when they're on the loo?

Some of my friends went on a Japan trip a couple of years ago. They told me how they got sprayed in the face from pushing the buttons on the toilets in the hotel they stayed at. I could see how confused they would be trying to operate them; look at how many buttons they have!

Those squat-toilets are very common in asian countries & elsewhere, I visited Thailand and they are all about squatting. Apparently, those who study such things say that squatting regularly to do your business is much better from a logistics & ergonomic standpoint and those who do it are much less likely to suffer from hemroids.
