My sweet home... Chicago
Hello everyone. Haven't posted anything for a looong time. Bad year. Insurance had to do an unplanned remodel on our house. (Pipe burst last winter). While having that fixed my workplace was destroyed by water. Had to manage the restoration of both. Too busy, too stressful.

That being said we are a bit... nervous about leaving the house. The phobia will pass but I would feel much better if I had even a crude system where I could check a few videocameras around the house just to be sure the pets are fine and the world isn't falling apart.

We do have a professional alarm system that is monitored. We can add to that system but I would rather have a redundant system - one that I can monitor remotely by phone or laptop.

Have any of you installed such things in your home/work? Recommendations and comments all welcome!

Paul, I'm sorry for your "annus horribilis" as Queen Elizabeth described her year of domestic disasters. I only have the system by Brinks (that has changed names twice) that I installed in 1992 when I bought this house. I have felt very secure with it, but I don't have anyone here during the day that I need to keep checking on. I do have a whole house water cut off valve that I always turn off when I leave for more than my usual work day which means turning the water heater control to the lowest setting, but even the period of time I am at work could be enough to do great damage if something were to let go. I am sure that you have given many of us food for thought.

I hope next year will be much better.

Paulg, I understand exactly what you want. I want the same. I have no answer. Why in the world these companies have not been at recent home shows I have attended are beyond me. I know the wireless systems have lousy ratings mostly camera failure The wired systems have pretty good ratings. I have heard good things about Schwann (sp) are/were sold at home depot. I would not use the monitored alarm company we also have that. But why another monthly bill. I understand you can "look in" with an I Phone and there is also a recorder that can be programmed for continuous loop recording or motion activated. The cams have night vision if vandals are ever an issue. To my knowledge HD will not install these systems. Look at the ones on HD's site there are cables that are of varying lengths you have to purchase separately if you have longer runs than what comes in the kit. Art

I went a different direction with mine.

I had two separate systems. One was home security and the other home automation which is where my cameras were. I could control either from a Web Browser or my phone. I got tired of having to use two separate applications depending on what I wanted to do and have some functionality in one and some in the other. And the two didn't mix.

So I went with a home security system that includes all the home automation features I had in the other system. Now I am able to automate all kinds of things. For example, when I open the garage door I have certain lights in the house come on. If I unlock the door into the house from the garage using the keypad lock it will unlock the door, disarm the security system and turn lights on. When I lock the door with the keypad it will turn off certain lights, etc. The point is having them combined gave me much more flexibility.

All my landscape lighting comes on at dusk and goes off at dawn and as the seasons change the system does too so I don't have to change programs at the time change, etc. As it gets darker earlier I've noticed the lights are coming on earlier too.

So with regard to the cameras mine are set up so when I disarm the house the inside cameras go into what's called privacy mode so nothing inside is being monitored or recorded. When I arm the system at night or when I leave the house the privacy feature turns off and the cameras are back on. Mine are not recording all the time but are streaming all the time. I can look in whenever I want and see what's going on. However, they will record on motion and also have night vision. In my case I organically got the cameras because my dog has a seizure disorder and I wanted to keep an eye on her during the day. I can see when the post man delivers a package and can run home to get it if I want or at least keep an eye on it during the day while I'm out.

I know it sounds expensive but it wasn't really at all. I have been buying bits and pieces here and there over the years and now I have a pretty extensive system. What happened in my case was I started with the Security system and the Cameras and kind of got hooked. Next thing I knew I bought a couple of door locks to add to the system. Before I know it the Thermostat was on the system, the garage door was on the system. It's really kind of fun to put it all together.

So I guess it depends on what you want. You can start small if you want but you may want to consider a system that allows you to grow if that's something you might want to do down the road. I'd hate for you to get something now and then have to replace it later on because there is something else you might want to do. In my case, I'm a little on the geeky side so I love all this stuff others may not. But in the past few years these systems have become more affordable and easier to use for those who don't like dealing with these things.

Your story makes me want to add another component to mine which is a flood monitor. If I understand if correctly it is a valve that would be put on the main water line coming into the house. If it detects a flood of water it automatically closes the valve to stop the flow of water into the house. I would be able to control this within my system as well to shut off the water I think. I'll have to look into that one a little more. I have seen them on line but all the other cool stuff catches my eye before something like this that could eliminate a catastrophe.

Good luck with your system

I got a cheap non HD setup without a hard drive on New Egg for 80 bucks. Came with 4 720 tvl cameras and all the cables to go 60 feet each.
Video was pretty soft but it worked fine.
Upgraded to a 8 camera SD/HD setup that can use any sd or HD cameras, got it for 139 on eBay, put my cameras on it, added a couple of 960h cameras from Costco for 69 shipped and a refurbished Western Digital Purple 1tb survelence drive for 45 bucks.
New cameras are wide angle and have 100 foot night vision. Still not quite HD but is much clearer and I can use the other cameras too and they look better.
Plan to add some HD cameras soon for at least the 2 covering the front yard and driveway. Mine is a LTS 8308T 8 camera DVR and has all the features like Android and networking so you can watch live or playback on your TV, pc, or tablet/phone. Has a 3 year warranty as well and so far works better then my first QSee cheepy.
Hardest part was figuring out how and where to run the bnc cables for the cameras, cameras themselves have nice 3 screw mounting setup that's fully adjustable and pretty easy to screw in place.
They have full HD kits that come with everything for 250 to 300 too but I already had the parts from the earlier setup so upgraded as deals came up.

I bought a few Motorola pet/baby cams on ebay. There's a smartphone app to download so you can see live video feed through your home wi-fi network. Anywhere you are you can connect to the cams to see what's going on. Cameras pan/tilt, have temperature probe and have speaker you can talk through.

Thanks for so much info guys. It won't be long till a house for sale without these systems will get passed by as fast as a 1 bathroom and no built in dishwasher.

UNTIL.....

.....People discover that security cameras are worth virtually nothing.

In 2009 I worked in a hotel with dozens of cameras. Caught on camera was a guy walking straight up to one, face showing, and STEALING IT. Sure we showed it to the cops. Who said 'don't call us we'll call you' and of course they never did.

Unless the transgression is part of a pattern or somebody you already know, catching the perp on camera is worth zero-point-nothing.

Of course the security camera salesman never so much as alludes to that.

Keep an eye on the dog and cat

I did mine more to watch the dog and cat during the day. Mostly the dog because she has a seizure disorder. I always felt the added benefit was the fact if someone did break in I would have them on camera. I hope never to have to experience what you described.

Home Cameras

I use Vuezone cameras , I have 4 moition detecting cameras outside and one regular camera inside. They are wireless and connect to your home network. You can view them over your smartphone or computer remotely. Also they will send email or SMS alerts when motion is detected. The website keeps a library of recorded events you view later or download to save.

They work well for my purposes being away from home all day. The only drawback is they require special batteries, but I have them cheap on Amazon.

Housesetter.com has an interesting approach to this kind of monitoring. I know all the principals (they were the original management team for OnStar) and they seem to have thought things through nicely.

Batteries

The batteries last anywhere from 3 to 12 months dependent upon how often you view the cameras on line or on your smart phone, also if you have the motion sensitivity set high the cameras will capture every little leaf blowing and run the battery down quickly.
