Hoover Constellation Info Please?

You know, I've been asking a lot of questions about vacuum cleaners lately, and I apologize if it is becoming a bit much. But I have another question for you vac collectors out there.

I just won a Hoover Constellation 82, and I don't know much about them. Are there any major differences between an 82 and other Connie models? Is this a good vacuum?

I've been wanting a Hoover Constellation for awhile every since it was recommended to me by some of the members here and I thought this one was a good price and stuff considering its condition and what it came with. Plus, my Hoover Celebrity needs a companion.

many moons ago was a great vacuum; just don't power up close to the dust kittens!!!

the constellation is a good cleaner. you may wanna start looking for the secondary filter now. its a felt-cloth disc that mounts above the motor. an established vac shop will be able to help. im not sure if its still available from Hoover, may be. if you need attachments, new tools are available from Hoover. you can also get a vintage attachment set on ebay. the vintage upright Hoover attachment sets sold on ebay often sell for CHEAP. as long as the attachments have a "button for locking", they will fit your Constellation. now that i think of it, i have seen both the filter and bags on ebay many times. Constellation 82.

Hey-

The constellation is a great machine! It has a decent (simple) motor and design and a good amount of power. The model you just won, however, is the only model that didn't float (the person who listed it was wrong--probably used wording found on the web). The 82 was the first version of it, and the following model--the 84 was the first to float.

So will mine have wheels or is it stationary? Not that I care if it floats or anything, I just love the style of the vacuum and the fact that it has been highly recommended by many!

It's just stationary...

Doesn't float, no wheels... You just drag it.

the hose i have on my connie 82 has the long stretchy blue hose so just leave it in the center of the room and work my way around the room without dragging the vacuum. But i did see that Fred Nelson had his 82 in a filter queen princess caster so that what i am going to do with my 82. Hoover did make a wheeled caddy for the 82 as i have been out bid on one on ebay so i know they were made specially for the 82 and are out there somewhere.

I thought all Connies floated, even the originals. Wasn't that the point? My grandparents definitely had a green one in their closet probably up until Katrina. I never got to play with it though, as I didn't appreciate vacuums as much as I do now. I'm not completely there with vacs, but I do like the Connies and the old Eureka vacs bring back memories.

The first Connie(model 82) didn't float, its gimmick was the double stretch hose that was supposed to allow you to place the cleaner in the center of the room and clean outwards.
The first floating model was the 1956 model 84, done in the new pastel colors of mulberry and sandalwood and matching the model 64 Citation upright.

how appropriate Toggle. the original Hoover Constellation worked on the same principle as the GE swivel top. The hose swivels 360, in theory, you dont need to move the cleaner to do the whole room. the tv commercial for the GE swivel-top should be watched by all!

Okay, I got my Hoover Connie today and I couldn't be happier!!

But now I have even more questions! lol

Is there I way I can find a replacement for the stopper on the inner part of the lid. You know, the part that goes around the opening for the hose?

Also, how do I access what appears to be a filter on the bottom "cradle" part?

What the heck does the little beaded chain do that is located on the outer part of the vacuum bag shield?

Once I replace the motor filter and get her a little cleaned up, I'm going to give her a test run. How exciting, now my Hoover Celebrity has a playmate!

Are you talking about the foam gasket that makes a seal between the hose and the bag? If so, I have an extra one of those, as well.. I can send it along with filters.

I've never been able to get that other "filter" (probably moreso a muffler) out of the bottom of the machine.

The beaded chain just keeps the top portion of the machine from opening all the way. Sort of holds it open. They discontinued that on the next model, I do believe.

That would be awesome if I could get one of those gaskets as well! The one I have is a bit crumbly and dry.

I knew that little ball chain served a purpose, I just couldn't figure out what.

btw, unless you have a good filter over the motor, i wouldnt run the machine too much until you get the bag gasket fred is gonna send you. otherwise dirt could get into the motor, which would mean death (for the Hoover). David
