And a Hey to Jeff :)

Hey Jeff

It seems a very cool place to be :) I love all the pics of vintage washers etc. As you know Britain was the land of the Twinnie so early autos here are ultra rare- there are a few around tho(My 2 year old Zanussi-Electrolux dosent quite qualify yet lol!!!).

Did you get the mail??

I am very happy you're here!

For anyone whos interested ;)

This link enables you to download the sales brochure for the UK version- it shows the dusting tools etc and how they fit on the handle and also the hard floor tool that dosent seem to be mentioned on the US model- the rest of the site is to follow lol!!!

Id best start getting some pics of my vintage small appliances sorted then ;)

Its very cool to be here :)

Seamus

i remember you quite well from the Hooverland yahoo group. i was "bellhopSA". the "alamo city". i wondered how long it would take you to show up! and please be sure to thank the webmaster (robert s.) of this site. he has a HELLUVA time corralling the members and threads on the three forums and still manages to be super-nice and post some of the most flawless washer videos ive ever seen! let us know what you think of his washer videos once you see them, esp the crazy *ABC-O-Matic*!

Welcome aboard, Seamus. (Hey, some of us in the US still use twinnies too! If you're looking for early autos in the UK, you might find some lurking in laundromats in small towns; I have seen postings here to that effect.)

I'll probably be getting one of these latter-day Constellations, and I can wait a few months. At the moment I don't have a practical excuse for it, since I have a nice old Kenmore with the eco-friendly dual power switch (so it only draws 450 watts on Low, which is more than sufficient for dusting & most of the floors), and don't have much carpet. However, in a couple of years I expect to be living somewhere else, would like to have large indoor area rugs, and at that point it will be useful to have a second vacuum with more power and a decent rotary carpet brush. May as well buy it now, before it gets lost in a corporate reshuffle...

I notice that the turbo-thingie has two wheels in the back and two small rollers in the front; like an updated version of their original late-50s / early-60s rug/carpet brush. That's cool, will help it stay in the right position relative to the carpet surface.

Pearl is OK by me, in fact it looks nice in the picture. Two-tone gray would be nice (early 60s Constellation color scheme, similar to the 2-tone gray on GPO 706 telephones), or light green, or light blue. I tend to think of stainless steel as restaurant kitchens rather than house & home, except for the kitchen sink for practical reasons.

Where's the latch to open the lid? Anyone have a picture of the inside? What sort of bags do they use, and where's the secondary filter for the HEPA filtration?

Re. the plastic skirt: Probably not just a cost-saving measure, but also: a) less likely to scuff a wooden floor if you drag it across the floor with the power off, and b) safety factor, does not conduct electricity, in case you drag it across a damp or wet area. There are plastics available now that are as durable as steel, so we'll see what happens...

I expect these things will also be popular with GenX who might remember the original from when they were very little kids. We had one. I didn't realise it was designed to float until I read something about hovercraft, and then it made sense and I thought that was way clever.

Re. anyone planning to paint one a different color: have it powder-coated. That'll cost you about $100 but the finish will be as good as factory original paint. You have to remove all the other fittings from the housing, i.e. strip it down and give the paint shop only the steel hemispheres, since powder-coat paint is baked on at high temps that would melt plastics and damage electronics.

Question for Hooverwheelaway: Can you find out if there is some way to modify the motor or controller for 2-speed operation? This would be done for reducing power consumption where lower suction is needed, rather than opening a suction regulator on the suction tube. It would also make it possible to sell these into the "green" market.

Last but not least: way-out color schemes: Midnight blue with little gold and silver "outer space" graphics of stars and galaxies and planets with rings around 'em, and the occasional 1950s cigar-shaped rocket ship streaking through space. Heck, do the planets & stars etc. in nite-glo paint so they glow in the dark. That would be fun. Not something I'd do personally, but it would be interesting to see someone try it.

Pics- old and new

See Freds (Hooverwheelaway)previous post- it has various comparison pics :)

P.s Laundramats (Laundrettes over here lol) are VERY few and far between now and all the ones im aware of use pretty new looking Maytag top loaders or Electrolux front loaders :(

I am Shocked!

I e-mailed Hoover to inquire about the Constellation. They responded by saying that they had no intention of reintroducing the Constellation. I e-mailed them back with a picture of it on Bestbuy's site. I'll let you all know what they say.

As of yesterday...

I asked around and inquired as to when we'd be getting them for sure. The higher ups said they're slated for early July. *Suggested* Retail will be between $199 & $239... as you can see Best Buy already has them on sale. My initial guess is that dealer/employee pricing will be somewhere between $130 and $170. The model number exists in our computer parts catalog/pricing guide, but no pricing has been put in as of yet. I'll be checking it daily. :-)

Tim, you probably e-mailed someone in the Hoover/Maytag consumer response departement... I doubt they know what's going on in the sales/marketing areas, and probably don't know about new products until they are out and being sold. I think BestBuy just put them on their site so they could preliminiarily sell the cleaners, before they are actually available to them... you know, like they sometimes do for new release movies.

I'll keep y'all posted!

Bags.............

Hey Fred,

What style bag is used in your Maytag Connie? It almost looks like an "S" bag. The cardboard collar did not look like the traditional "J" bag.

I've found "S" bags in vintage Connie's I've rescued. If you cut the cardboard just right, it will work.

I hope there isn't a unique bag for these new ones.

Joe

And another question...

what's the cord management on this machine?

Cleats, cord reel?

It's very attractive, and I hope it stays in production a few years. I would like one, but doubt if I can get one this year.

I think the airpowered brush might be the thing for low pile carpet, like I have in this apartment. I like my WindTunnel canister, but the power nozzle is the weakest link.

none at best buy

My friend Victor and i went to Best Buy today and no Constellations were seen. Did notice the last of the Z's on the opened discount section marked down. BTW Fred, i found the Hoover Windtunnel 2 at Target and it was in my basket and in my home before i knew what was happening! I call it my NASCAR vacuum! I have the red one. Saw a red one and an orange one at Best Buy when i was there. All i need for mine is a floor brush but i have plenty of those lying around! It's a man's vacuum! it looks like a motorcycle! Can't see a little lady using this one. Yeah, a man's vacuum! Hehehe!

Bags and things.

Hey Joe~

The bags I have for the Maytag Satellite are in fact a bag of their own. They are a HEPA bag... come two to a package, and come with a filter. I've gotten a bunch of packages from Seamus in England. *Thanks Seamus*

In my playing with the machine, I have found that the current US type S bags will work just dandy. My only concern, however is they have no rubber seal inside the cardboard hole, and that may be a dust leakage problem. The S bags also do not come in a HEPA variety (yet, anyways), just the Allergen Filtration and regular (which I never use). I forsee that a new bag is probably going to be introduced (Filtrete, I'm sure)--with everyone wanting HEPA filtration. That way they could use them in the current WindTunnel Canisters as well.

Lawrence/Maytagbear~

No cleats... no cordreel. The cord wraps around the bottom "skirt" of the machine. It's too long to wrap around the handle like one could do with the old machines. I was told that the Maytag Satellite went from concept to production in 11 months. (Which I guess is pretty fast for a product design/launch). Because of that, they wanted to keep the design as simple as possible (no cord reel or electric powerhead). Plus, the European market really didn't need an electric powerhead. On that same hand, it was also told to me that if successful, there's no saying that they wouldn't add other features like a cord reel or electric powerhead at some point in the future.

Marty~

I think somewhere the BestBuy website says that store pickup is not yet available and the machines are on backorder for 1-2 weeks... I doubt they even have the machines in inventory. But I thought the same thing... "Get me to BestBuy ASAP!!"

Congrats on your Windtunnel 2 purchase! We've had them for a few weeks now, and people have seemed interested in them--moreso than the Z. I liked the cleaner, thought it was a bit bulky, but really did clean very well. The model I brought home had the electronic height adjustment, in dial form, that you twist to the desired setting. There are 2 belts on it, ala the Innovation and Conquest...a flat belt coming off of the motor, going to a pulley and a V belt going from the pulley to the agitator. I love the way the hose is set up... how the wand does not store inside the hose, creating no need to disconnect it and flip the handle around.

Click the link for some pictures of my test-drive. :-)

A little bird told me that a bagged version will be coming out in September or October--later this year.

Hey Fred/ Windtunnel 2

Hey mate

Firstly the bags were not a problem :).
That Windtunnel looks very cool-Id have one over a Dyson any day!. But you havent seen a long hose til you've seen our "One" infinity (link below). Apparently the new models have much better performance than the 1st model One which Which(our version of CR) said had the worst performance of any upright they had tested in the last 20 years!!!!

Fred

If a bagged version of the WT2 is planned i think i would rather have that version better. Could be less bulkier. I do love the way the hose and wand is ready for use right away!

I will be checking Best Buy every couple of weeks for the Constellation! Marty
