Haing got the Keymatic running I decided it was time to check out the condition of the tub and the bearings, based on my previous experiences of Hoover tubs I was expecting a rusty rotten mess given the age of this machine (about 37 years) and also having looked at the photos of Mikes A3008.

I was pleasantly surprised by what I found

Here is a series of photos of the Job the first ones are of the usual stripping and diconnecting wires etc

The backplate came away complete with gasket, tense moment here as i withdrew the drum to see what condition the tub was in, i think you will agree for a Hoover it is pretty good

As you can see it has the normal rust above a spot weld by the heater retainer and the outer tub lip has rust but nothing as bad as i have seen some more modern Hoovers i have worked on

I used the trusted de-rust on the rust the chemical metal is my favourite for this type of job, it dries quickly and is rock solid once it sets, you can then sand it paint it etc, though you dont have to paint it

Chemical metal dried, and Hammerite applied to rear tub outter lip, I like Hammerite it works well and is easy to use

The drum itself was as clean as a whistle no deposits on the spider, the rear plate was very clean just needed a wire brushing on the outter edge where the gaksett sits

Good and bad bits!, the edge of the rear plate cleaned up easily and has no pitting at all, the bearings where on the way out, as you can see water has gotten through the drum seal, there was also rust forming on the front bearing

Of course, whether you don't need any elastic behaviour of your metal I suppose (It happend to have placed the repairation and when tightenin the first screw everythig broke down!!)... I always have used silicone (really more elastic) in those cases but somewhere else the epossidic paste it's been good the same.

Bye, and nave a great laudry day when finished!!

PS: you shound't smoke using chemical materials... it can be dangerouse!!!

Smoking whilst on the Job

Hello Diomede

Yes I agree that in some cases a flexible sealant is the better option

Hmm a heady mix of smoke and fumes can be very intoxicating..........(memories of Pop**rs come flooding back)

So thankyou for your comments :-)

I too am very impressed by its internal condition.

Being a matchbox, the whole thing should have disintegrated by now and yet yours is in fantastic overall shape.

New bearings and a soundly repaired outer drum, should see her going for many years to come.

to think some fool threw her out! thank god you had put the word round you colleagues is all i can say.

all power to you for a successful rebuild.

the pics are a bit of a nostagia trip for me, of when my dad repaired our matchbox 3236h. although, for a more authentic look you'd have to remove the outer drum from the cabinet, detach motor and pump and remove the powder drawer plumbing! was a total stripdown to empty cabinet, which sat in the kitchen, with all the bits spread on the garage floor.

He got a new backplate from the neighbours ex-husband, from three doors down, who was in the applianec repair industry.

doesnt look like you need a new backplate just yet though!

fingers crossed for success.
all the best with your uber rare machine.
cheers

That is a most generous offer but i couldnt possibly accept it would be far too much too expect, so i will descretely leave it outside your door and go back to the bus stop

Now tell me does a number 25 go to were you live

Nahhh....

BA flight from London to Sydney
Qantas flight from Sydney to Canberra
Airport bus to Civic
162 bus ($3.00) from Civic to home...bus stops at the end of the street and it is only a 5min walk....

Surely you can carry an 80kg machine in hand luggage?

I'm happy to pay the bus fare too....

Looks just like my garage, but two things missing, 12 mugs with thick strong black coffee dregs in them and some puddles of water, got have some water on the floor, ho and that ash tray would be a lot fuller.

Great photos.
