About month ago my much appreciated Hoover Constellation vacuum was crippled when the hose plastic (after almost 20 years) began disintegrating and the hose literally fell apart.

Of course the Constellation has been discontinued and even though the vac still works just fine, finding a replacement hose was impossible. So, I instead turned to the Hoover Portapower vacuum. I'm very pleased with it so far but I'm striking out in terms of trying to find an adapter that will allow me to use my older attachments (which are far more common) with the Portapower, as Hoover uses a different system twist and lock system with the Portapower.

Does anyone know of an adapter I could use or have an idea that would allow me to use 'regular' attachments or even the extension wand that still exists from the Constellation?

In the link below is the closest I could find.

Thank you for any help you might be able to provide.

Adaptor

That adaptor is to connect older style hoses to the Portapower not attachments - these would date back to the 1960s. As MattL says, much better to have a new hose made up to fit on the old Constellation ends - you may find an old style hose on ebay but if not make sure a new lightweight corrugated hose is at least as long as the old hose (unstretched) so the Constellation is not round your feet the whole time. A good vac shop may even have old style hoses available

We have one of the newer Hoover Constellation's that we bought in 2005. I love the long stretch hose that wraps around the body of the vac for storage. About 10 years ago a small hole developed in the hose near the end that plugs into the wand. I repaired it by wrapping some silver duct tape securely around the area that was tearing and the hose has been fine ever since this jerry rigged repair.

I agree with Matt’s suggestion that you take your hose to a vacuum shop and have them make you a new hose with the existing ends on it.

BTW, both my husband and I LOVE our Hoover Constellation! Its a very handy vac for above floor cleaning especially because of the extra long stretch hose. Too bad that Hoover decided to cease production of these fine canister vac’s.

It was called Maytag Satellite in UK and possibly Europe as Hoover US did not have the rights to the Hoover name and possibly Constellation as they belonged to Candy at the time. It was similar to the one posted by Eddie above. The hose connection is completely different and the hose itself was a pain as it was too flexible and the powerful suction compressed it so the cleaner is always round your feet.

I remember we'd an old Hoover Constellation when I was a kid. It never really got that much use though, as it was pretty ancient and I think it was just held onto as it was such an oddly retro space age looking device.

We'd a Nilfisk GM 90 which was a little more boring, but probably far superior to it in terms of suction, filtration and was certainly a lot quieter.

Both interesting machines, classics of different eras.
