Here is the Hoover Spin drying washer model 0517 filling up. I think this one is from 1970-71. It is harvest gold and has the plastic tub. These were made here in North Canton and special equiptment was designed to produce this machine in a couple of different colors and models. This is the basic model without the automatic rinse. Enjoy!

Here comes the suds...

Soap has been added...filling is continued...this just plugs into a standard outlet and has a rubber hose for fill and another rubber hose to drain...the soap was a half cap of liquid detergent...the load a bunch of my shop towels!

Here it is spinning...

Rinsing out the tub and spinning the towels to almost dry! I am so impressed by how much water comes out of these items. It won't take long for these to dry...all of this in just a few short minutes! Why aren't these on the market anymore???

Nice machine, you had the benefit of colour on your machines whereas the UK models just had trim colours...

The spinner cover looks good all one piece metal, the sloping ridge gives the illusion of a much bigger top....The spincan looks like our earlier models with holes spaced evenly around, ours had sections of holes etc...Is the top of the spincan plastic or metal??

This is our equivalent model , the Hoover 3314 nicknamed "The Washdog" in the 70`s adverts...the link is to Hoover first twinny the Hoover 3174, produced 1957.

Hoover Twinnies

Hi, yes the same question I have.... Why do they not build this type of machine anylonger in any western country?!?!
Here in Germany we had the Hoovers as well as the AEGs, MIELEs and SCHARPFs or RONDOs and other less known companies that produced this type of machines. I guess, the selling of twinnies stopped here in Germany already at the end of the sixties/beginning of the seventies! I got my last new ones in 1986 from Hoover respectively 1989 from Hotpoint directly from the UK.
Today I own three of them: an AEG Lavalux, a Hoovermatic 3301L and my beloved Hotpoint Supermatic de luxe 9414 - Hoovermatic and Hotpoint are to be seen in the Yahoo forums!
The spinning-rate with the Hotpoint at 3,100 rpm is even higher than with the Hoover at 2,300 rpm - namely nearly ironing-dry!

Hi Tom,
That is a really great little machine you have there I hope you are enjoying it.
I don't know about the U.S.,but the Hoovermatic Twintub was immensely popular here in Australia I believe they sold over a million of them during their lifetime.
I think Hoover stopped manufacturing them here in the 1990s as the vast majority of people now own fully automatic T.L.'s or F.L.'S as I dare say it is easier to set it and forget it as they say.
I actually own a Haier family size Twintub and to tell you the truth I would not swap it for the world.
The only manufacturers of Twintubs here in Oz now are Haier and Hitachi and N.E.C. make a little compact one but that is about it.
Can you get T.T.'s in the U.S?

Yes, the Danby Twin tub

can be had in the States from Compact Appliance.

Price is 269 plus shipping.

Twin tubs may be faster than automatics, but do require a greater degree of operator involvement.

Also, the Hoover my great aunt had at her summer place was NOISY. One summer she had 6 of the 10 grandchildren there, and it was running for hours.

She didn't let me adjust the controls, but she did let me transfer from the wash tub to the spin tub, and then from the spin tub to the hanging basket.

I've been looking, though not hard, for a twin tub in decent shape at a dirt cheap price to play with.
(Of course, I have a slight preference for the Maytag Porta Washer. Slight.)

Chestermikeuk...the top is metal. This was our basic model in the line. I wish that it had the auto rinse as this would make things less messy.

Greg...these machines were not long lived units in my opinion...I have seen many that are just rust buckets and have thrown some away! A very good friend of mine had one that went bad and was horrified when she could not get another one. She bought a Danby and has not been happy with it. Last year she found a gold twin tub with the auto rinse for a "hefty" price of $30 at a yard sale. The guy even delivered it to her house and it is very nice. She is very happy now!

noise...

The agitator motor is very quiet...but the spinner...yikes! It sounds like a freight train...odd because the motor looks like a Constellation motor and the Connie was a very quiet vacuum.

How fun Tom! I have a model 515 that works perfectly but had a dead pump. Thanks to the generosity of a friend across the pond, I have new parts for it which a friend is going to help me install, then I'll have a cool washer to enjoy with my appliance friends!

I never knew these were manufactured in Ohio. I figured they all came from overseas. Interesting! The only downside of the American units for some of us is they don't say "by appointment of her majesty the Queen". I love that! LOL
