Hoovermatic versus Supermatic...

Not to throw a spanner in the spinner but after a conversation with another AW member last night, I wondered what people's opinions of the better twin tub were. As I use both Hotpoint and Hoover models on an intensive basis at work, I have a very definite opinion..! Unfortunately I have very little experience of Servis machines so I can't comment... For me the Hoovermatic wins hands down... Should I stand well back..?

Whisper, never heard "spanner in a spinner"! Love it! I will use it regularly to annoy friends.

A difficult question to answer...

So I'll cut to the chase, I'd say Servis had the best wash action, Hotpoint had the best spin and auto rinse and Hoover were the best for speed.

Hotpoint and Hoover also had the benefit of thermostatically controlled heating, which Servis lacked.

Hoover were also slightly narrower in depth and taller, making them slightly easier to store and easier on your back!

Personally I think Hotpoints have a slight edge overall over the others, having a better wash action than the Hoovers, as well as the filter pan, but I'm slightly biased as that is what I use daily and is what the majority of the twin tub owners in my family had.

Indeed... Not easy to answer.

My observations, having used both extensively are:
The Hoovermatic is definitely more reliable in constant use - the Hotpoints regularly develop difficulty in balancing the spin amongst other problems, and they are more complex than the Hoover.
The Hotpoint definitely is superior in that it filters the wash water constantly.
The Hotpoint drainage system is very slow compared to the thrashing torrent that exits the Hoover!
The Hotpoint auto rinse is very slow and very sensitive to water flow rate.
The Hoover wash action can damage clothes if the wash time is exceeded but despite Hotpoint's claims, the Spiraclean agitator also causes damage.
The Hoover cannot heat and spin/rinse simultaneously, whereas the Hotpoint can.
Similarly the Hoover can't be emptied while rinsing is still in progress while the Hotpoint can.
The Hoover washes cleaner.
The Hotpoint enamel wash and spin tubs both rust. The Hoover's stainless steel and aluminium do not.
The Hotpoint's fascia markings rub off, the Hoover's well you know...
Just a personal thing but brown and cream wasn't even particularly contemporary in the eighties...
