If nothing is placed on the coil to conduct heat away, it will glow red at higher settings. I think these pictures were made to show that the hot plate works. What was said about the coils glowing red was in regard to when a pan was sitting on the element and not making good contact.
I was always under the impression any electric elements glow that extra bright red when they're on and in the thralls of cooking and perhaps the pot or pan removed...
Besides the display looks a lot better with that element truly "on" than showing a plain black one with it off...
As I visualize hotplate cartons I have seen showing photos of those on them, "off" or an "out of the carton, before use"-shot...
Go induction, you won't regret it. (As long as your post are compatible.)
I have just a single cheapie, and it's fantastic. Mine is the same as this, though it has a different brand name on it.
This is Kmart Australia, not Kmart USA, just to be clear.
Note that this model has its control panel angled down from the cooking surface - so the touch controls can't be damaged by a big pot over-hanging the controls. (Which is a common failure.) A good design.
The display shows the power output in Watts (200W to 2000W) or in temperature mode, shows the set temperature in degrees C. (60 to 240 degrees C.)
I have a duxtop portable induction plate I use 99% of the time. It is several years old and still works great. If I need more than one burner at the same time I will go to the gas.
