Hi guys,
just found this wonderful site so I'm hoping you can help me with my Hotpoint 18580 washer.
It was on spin when it suddenly went bang and tripped the fuse.
I took the back off and have removed the motor.
Not sure if it is the original one it is a GEC BD 6222.

One of the brushes was cracked and broken and looks like it arching to the armature.
I cleaned the brush up and tried the motor in the machine again.
As soon as I set it to spin there was a loud bang and the smell of burning!
Is it likely that the motor is shorting out.
Can I get a re-conditioned motor?

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated as it is a great old machine
and I dont really want to get rid of it as it has served me well for many years.

Hi you probably just need a set of carbon brushes.
Dont fit the old ones if they are carcked!
Part number: 1600474, fit genuine only.

Welcome to the site! A fellow Essex boy.

I had a 18580 a couple of years ago, when it began having motor issues it was passed on to a fellow club member.

Mine never went bang, but I had erratic speed control, the judders and the awful smell. Turned out the armature needed replacing, and as far as I know the machine is still going. I would say the brushes obviously need doing on your if they are cracked, but since it can also be the armature you may just want to treat her to a new or recon motor. I wouldn't have a clue as to how to fit an armature, just changing the motor is a very straight forward job.

Thanks for your advice guys but I think it needs a bit more than new brushes. As I said I cleaned up the broken, cracked brush but it still does not work.

Nick, do you know where I can get a recon motor in the Essex area?
I tried sripping down my motor to have a better look at it but I cant see how the armature comes out of it, any idea's?

As I said I dont want to really scrap the machine if I can help it, I see they are quite popular on this site.
There must be some experts out there who know what the problem is!

I've still got the original hand book so I thought I'd post a pic of it here!
Mine still looks as good as this so it would be a shame to see her go!

Just had a thought that you may find the new motor has a different wiring connecttion box on it, there was a conversion kit available, cant really remember if this model is affected by this now but I remember that being a bit of a problem with these old motors.

Hi Gary.

A great machine you have got there and fantastic news that it is in such great condition. The old variable 18-series are a fantastic machine.

Not knowing any repair shops in Essex, and only having visited the area once (to collect an old 19-series Hotpoint dishwasher), I am afraid I cant drop any hints as to a source of new motors.

Suffice to say that, being Hotpoint, and a design that ran for many years (mechanically, little changed for getting on for 25 years) spares should be easier to come buy than other brands.

Will keep my eyes peeled for any suitable spares sources for you.

Whatever you do Gary dont get rid of it!!!

Cracking machines and will serve you for years to come.

Repair to these machines is relatively simple, motors can often be sought on ebay too.

Last one I saw was £30. An absolute bargain for years of trouble free laundry.

Mine and Pauls 18 series machines. These were produced in 1982.

How do Phil.

Me and Rob acquired the 93730 last year - I think!

It came from Letchworth Garden City and was one of the furthest out and back in a day drives I had done to get a machine.
Furthest north was to Newcastle-upon-Tyne for the A3350 electron, whilst furthest south (after the 93730) was for a Hotpoint 19950 dishwasher, which came from Brentwood in Essex.

The 93730 needs some work doing to it, as the door release cable was snapped, when i picked it up. Plus the sidestrips need dealing with - dont they all!
