Hotpoint Agitator V English Electric Agitator Videos

Hi Guys and Gals

I was thinking the other day that I could also have some fun and do a comparison between a couple of agitators.
I borrowed an English Electric 1970s Twin tub agitator from a friend and have compared it with the Hotpoint Spiraclean agitator also from a 1970s Twin tub.
The English Electric Liberator twin tub is vertually the same machine as the Hotpoint as it was made by the same company. It has cosmetic differences of course and the agitator but the only other difference is the way the machine filters the lint from the wash water.The Hotpoint uses the Filter tray and the recirculating water comes out from an opening above the tray and the English Electric has a hole in the side of the tub which the recirculating water comes out of and something called a brush filter plugs into the hole which catches the lint.
Of course because the inner workings and general design are the same I can swap the agitators around. I thought it would be fun to compare them as I had never seen the English Electric agitator in action.
I used my 1976 Hotpoint twin tub for the comparison.
I have videoed the comparison in 3 parts. Part 1 is a general view of both agitators and of course parts 2 and 3 are the videos of each agitator in action.
I have attached a picture of the Hotpoint machine below and will attach a picture of The English Electric machine in the next post as I cant work out how to post more than one pic in the same posting.

PS Apologies its a Twin tub and not an automatic washer but I no longer own an automatic top loading agitator model.

very, very nice! i think i prefer the *spiralator* (as we call it). though i must say, the best test of an agitator is with a heavy load. i like your video-style, long steady shots. will be watching for more!

Beautiful Machines, Mark!

Started making fun of a company called "English Electric" until I remembered "American Motors" !!!

You have such great variety in Twintubs adn Semi-automatics, so much more than we have here--I envy you.

Love the control panels, especially the Hotpoint's. That large black button in the back and the smaller one in the front--all of them, in fact--what do they do? What do they say? Could we have a peak, please?

Also love your speech and your accent, like we don't have one, haha ;-D Mikey in America

Excellent comparison videos - I'm with you though, partial to the red agitator not only for looks but for the action as well. Steady rollover, no thrashing about as with the spiral one. What are your thoughts on the cleaning ability of each?

The English Electric agitator looks similar to the original GE Activator in that the fins extend beyond the skirt.

I'm with you---I really like the red color.

Brett the load on view was basically a full load.I wash the amount that will fit into the spinner.The wash side holds 7Ib and the spinner 6Lb.All the clothes fitted into the spinner and came to the top of the drum.Its very decieving with the EE agi as it dosent look like there is much in the wash.I infact when using it afterwards kept putting to much into the wash as it kept looking like there wasent a full load but I couldnt get quite a lot of the load into the spinner.The EE agi keeps a lot of the clothes around the bottom where as the Hotpoint seems to keep a lot round the top and so its much easier to judge the load size.The Hotpoint agi pushes the clothes back and forth into the agi and the rollover can look very slow apart from the back and forth motion.The EE gives you definate rollover which is very easy to see and is great fun to watch.

Gansky the cleaning performance seams to be excellent with both agitators. The Hotpoint looks like its a very thorough vigarous wash and you would think that would be better but I think the English Electric one is very decieving.Although it dosent look like much is going on I think its all going on under the water with a good deep through cleaning action you cant see.I have falling in love with the EE agi and I got the machine out again last night and washed away for hours! Its so much fun to watch the rollover and it not splashing all over the kitchen floor and all over me! (The Hotpoint agi is quite bad for splashing).

Hi Mickey I have taken a pic of the controls for you which is below.
The left hand dial is the wash timer.On the Hotpoints before this model it had the time in minutes but then they went to the "min,med and max" times I think it was to do with the wash labels on clothes as they would say min wash etc on them.The large black button is for the spinner lid and to stop spin. You push it once and it stops spin and then when the drum has stopped you press it again to open the lid.The switch underneath is for the automatic rinse.You either have it on automatic or constant spin.The dial on the right is the thermostat.You can set the thermostat and the wash time and when it reaches temp the thermostat flies back and the washing starts.Hoover twin tubs have always used the actual temperatures on there thermostats but Hotpoint have always used the system which you have in America eg Warm,Hot etc.

HAvent watched the vids yet as I have just been transported to the start of my washing career at the age of 2.5 years!!!

The english electric was the same as my mums washer and I used to help her by staning on a stool.

Never thought I would ever see one of those again!!!

Which Agitator ?

Well if you ask me I like the sprials of the white sprial agitator. I liked the rollover action of the clothes better than the red English electric. The Hotpoint would create a better layer of suds on top, espscially if you were using a detergent like Tide. Which is what I want to see then I know that the clothes are getting really clean. But really nice videos of both agitators. Thank you. Danf.
