this is so great to see, you say "factory finish" me thinks it will be better than that me lad ;-)

Hi Lee, it's so interesting watching you strip the old girl. I have always been into Zanussi, Bendix, Miele, Bosch etc but due to afew other collectors have got into older Hotpoint and Hoover machines and love them and know have some in the collection. Looking forward to seeing the end result, good luck.

Thanks for the deconstruction views - particularly useful as there is a possibility that at least one 18-series in the fold might be subjected to a similar sort of rebuild to your 1851/03.
Be fantastic to be able to use this thread as the equivilent of a Haynes Manual of Hotpoint 18-series Overhaul.

Not going to hijack this thread but it seemes that things have been a bit 18-series over the last couple of weekends, as last weekend saw my dad working a wonder and turning this....

The colour is Peugeot Midnight Blue and we purchased it from halfords. The colour is what Mike used on his 1509/10 Liberator toploader with great results.

Though disturbed me a great deal when first applied as, on immediate application, it looks rather aquamarine green when wet.

In the future though, I will be using this shade on mine and Rob's 1701/01 dryer and my 1509/05. I am really happy with the finished result.

Anyways......roll on your 1851/03 Lee - more, more, more!

Great restoration tutorial, I love the schematic diagram with all the nuts and bolts taped on, now thats a way to stop the "Oh wheres that screw gone, I`m one short" or "Why have I got one over" ...lOl, its gonna look grand with a coat of paint and a full service overhaul...

I still get thrown seeing that lovely vitreous enamel drum inner drum on this machine....superb!!!

Looking forward to seeing your wesher fully restored!!

And, to the "Other Owner"...its in very good nic, dont worry I identimarked it so it wont be swapped out for another one...LOl

Does Your Washer tell You Its A "Liberator"

It always baffles me when people scribble all over the front of a lovely colour manual, when most have a few pages blank at the back for such info.

Or is it just that us collectors want them pristine??

I do like to see scribbles from the owners though, sort of gives us a little glimpse into the life of the machines..

p.s, the number now sends you to a call centre, "Press 1 for Gaskets, 2 for Motors, 3 for instructions on "How to Wash" and 4 if you sadly own any other brand!!!

I know what you mean about the graffiti on the manual covers - kind of grates a bit.

But, as you yourself mention, its nice to have some of the history of the machine.

I did like it when we removed the back of Mathew's 3226 Keymatic, to find repair updates and notes scrawled on the frame of the machine.
I think Richard's 1504 toploader has repair notes scrawled on its insides too.

I’ve come over all 18-series starry eyed and it's bloody good.

When are you going to plug that machine in and try it out, come on I’m getting impatience.

A teaser for someone else, is there going to be a separate thread for another 18-series, ho, goody goody. Gone all starry eyed again.

As you can see from the photos the rust is much worse than I first thought in the base plate, and the bottom edges of the cabinet are quite bad as well, not penetrating rust, just on the surface and it’s all flaky, I certainly cant do it myself, well I could but it would look ten times worse than it is now, I just don’t have the patience to spray paint anything, I want it done now and end up with runs and dribbles, no good at all, so I don’t mind paying a professional to do it. It’s a shame she has to live in the garage.

I’ve had a busy weekend out in the work shop, Saturday the project machine had a little up-grade and I washed 4 loads it plus Sunday stripping the 1851/03 lets hope the good warm weather is going to last for some time.

Liberator 1851 Manual

I aim to collect manuals and other pieces of literature in either digital or paper form. Unfortunatley for me I'm having bother finding manuals or brochures. I also see that the 1851 that manual belonged to must have lasted into the 90's. Why so hard to find then?

Time to own up!

Hiya Lee.

I plugged it in on the Friday night that I took it to my folks for the respray.
Only on spin and without any water though.

It has been fitted with a 100% original Hotpoint Peterborough built pump, totally different to what we all know as Hotpoint pumps which are sourced from an external supplier.
This original pump is possibly of the same type that was fitted to the Hotpoint 1600 - I will have to get a photo of it to show the differences (assuming that visually there are some).
Its a lot louder and rumbly than what we are used to, though the absence of water and it being bone dry probably accentuated the noise.

It will get tested soon though.

p.s let us know how it goes with the powder coaters. I am really intrigued to see the standard that is achived, as I have two machines that could do with the same treatment.

To tide us over, I thought I would post a piccy of one of the more obscure Liberators, in the form of the 1824 two button jobby. Was only in production for a year from 1978 into 1979, when it was replaced by the 18340...

Actually quite nice for a Bottom of the Range machine. If I ever come across a Liberator over here I'd say it would be that model as it would just about fit the typical budget then. If I did I wouldn't mind it at all. No matching dryer for it though. Unless I got a white door for a 1701. I'm off school for 4 weeks now and I hope something good will happen.

Hi James.

Owning a couple of doors off the 1824 and best buy models 1827 Super electronic and 1700 dryer, to find a white door would be a miracle.
Just like with the powder drawer fascias and any white fasciad machine built in the 80s, the doors yellow something chronic.

The one below is a 1700 dryer and is a goodun, when compared to the doors I have.
I think the fascia sticker would have been white as well at one time...

You have a decent spares stash I take it? That wouldn't consist of two Hotpoint Supermatic spinner motors would it? I'm having terrible bother findinh one for the spinner and one for the 146*

Fraid not James.

Twin tubs and top loader machines are a swine to store, as you cant really stack things on them or stack them on other machines.
The awkwardness of the machines also filters down to their spare parts, which are a pain to harbour too.

As a result, I tend not to hold such spares myself.

I'm off school for 4 weeks and I intended to get the motors, other spares, machines from "irishmark" (but I think me and him had a little fall out over nothing, I NEED AN AGONY AUNT ON THAT ONE LOL) and hopefully finding something along the way. Also some adjustments were made to the Wash House.

Ah Liberators... I dream... What a nice sight to have my very own one up in that shed... OR 1600/1830?
