I went back to the house we moved out of yesterday and was going to shut down the refrigerator down by the bar, empty the ice bucket open the doors and unplug it. Well I was surprised when i opened the freezer door and had a bin of water and no ice. Nothing except the light was working. The compartment was room temperature so i don't think the defroster got stuck. Felt the bottom of the freezer and it was not warm. This is a top freezer model. It is about 25 years old. Never had a problem with it. No compressor noise no interior fan running, just dead. Any ideas what might have happened?

You say not the defrost but it sounds like the timer may have gotten stuck in defrost. The heater shouldnt be on as the defrost t'stat would keep it off. Other posibility is the control may have fouled and is not calling for the unit to run.
