Hotpoint supermatic .One for the UK guys

Hi all
This machine is a hotpoint supermatic 9414W with a stuck Agitator .I cant budge the dam thing and i don't want to break anything . When trying to loosen the grey knob it just clicks as its turned .The machine [although its in excellent condition ] hasn't been used for a long time . I suspect the bolt inside the white plastic agitator is seized into the spider underneath . Anyone got any suggestions on how to get some lube in there . Any help would be much appreciated

Heat it up

If the machine is watertight I would get it up to almost a boil and then stick some gloves on and try to see if the screw thread will move .

Managed

to squirt WD through the small holes in the agitator left it overnight and with a bit of fiddling it came loose .No wonder it was stuck probably hasn't been off since the thing was new .it was full of dirt and dried up fluff . The tripod is a little loose so i decided to take it off and see what was going on underneath Managed to pull the tripod off with a set of pulley draws but it is corroded also the seal underneath needs replacing .God only knows where I'm gonna get hold of them
. If anyone has spare ones they want to sell please let me know. My next job is to get the gearbox off and see what's in it if anything hopefully OIL but that's for another day

Tripod

managed to get the replacement tripod from Slowspin so all in need now is a new seal to go underneath it. If anyone has one to sell please let me know .Any tips on getting the [plastic] tub nut off would be appreciated.There is some rust at the bottom of the tub and i would like to do something about it before i reassemble the machine. i have soaked it in WD and left it for a day or two but it wont budge .The whole centre column it turning but the nut wont budge.I have done a lot of cleaning today .the machine is filthy inside and out but under all the muck its in good condition and the white cabinet has no rust .I have also cleaned away all the oil that has leaked from the gearbox due to the plastic plug being loose .Its getting cold now so I'm off back in the house for a hot drink .will do a bit more tomorrow

with all the muck removed. So many plastic parts that really should be metal [and once were] the quality went down while the price of this machine went up. The person i got this machine from bought two at the same time ,One for his wife and one for his mum .You can see the variations in price on the receipts that were inside the user manual

The tub nuts are a little tricky to get off but I’ve been able to find a replacement from time to time and therefore cut the old one off . I’ve done this with a hot knife before to prevent damage to the tub enamel . Keep your eye out on eBay . If I see anything I will let you know . Darren

only want to take it off to treat the rust before it gets any worse .But i may just try to do that with the post and heater in situ rather than break the nut and not have a replacement but if you come across a nut please let me know .I think the seal that fits under the tripod may be the next big obstacle .I have seen a couple on Ebay but when i try to buy the i just get the out of stock message but i will keep at it you never know one may pop up

Another reason the prices vary is due to them being different models the 9404 was a lower end with no automatic rinse feature. and although they may not be as well built they are still around I have 4 all working and in great condition. I have some parts from one a took apart due to not needing yet another

they were different models .I wonder why he didn't get 2 the same [maybe Comet only had 1 of each in stock]. I worked on lots of these when i first started work but time marches on and you forget stuff that was once second nature

Hi all

The replacement tripod arrived today [courtesy of Slowspin66] and i have a new plastic nut for the centre post so i did as suggested and cut the old one off with a hot knife . i also removed the heater and the drain outlet . next job was to tackle the rust . I honestly thought the tub was in a bad way but was pleasantly surprised to find that all that rust was caused by some old hair grips and a few nails that had rusted away [ i really do think the agitator hasnt been off for a very long time .even the trap in the tub drain hose was full of crud] . After scraping the rust off and then a good scrub with a brillo pad the tubs looking much better .the only thing i cant shift is the dard stain at the top of the picture .will start reassembly tomorrow

I did see it but i had already managed to get hold of one .Just waiting for it to arrive. It will finish the job off . Can you tell me if i should put a little grease between the tripod bearing and the new seal underneath or is it best left as it is ?

It won’t hurt

Anthony I would put a smear of grease on the drive shaft but not loads as you don’t want it working up the
Support shaft and finding its way into the tub . Pleased you’ve got it going post a few pictures please when it’s all done .

Well i did

a bit more yesterday .Tub is back on although i haven't tightened the plastic nut yet . can you tell me if i have put the drain hose [from tub to pump] back together properly as in the fat bit with the filter onto the tub and the other end onto the pump .I have to say all the rubber parts on this machine are in very good condition [no perished bits any where ] even the spiner drain hose is in good nick however if you look carefully you can see a slight bulge on the black hose in the photo .this was where oil had dripped onto it .Next i put the top on and reconnected all the electrics and the two cables .I also had to move the tension spring on the wash pump as the belt was rubbing against the centre post of the wash tub [maybe a new belt might help ] Will do a bit more tmro if its not too cold

Hi All

this machine is just about finished now .Its all up and running but i would just like to know what the correct belt would be to drive the spin dryer [not the pump] .When i got the machine there was no belt present so after a rummage through my ancient old van stock [or what's left of it] i found an elasticated belt that fits and it works ok but looking at the pulleys on the motor and the clutch pully it looks as though there should be a V belt fitted .

decided to give this machine

a run today .All went well for the first couple of loads and then blue smoke and that tell tale acrid smell [spinner motor burnt out ] What caused the problem was a yellow duster that was on the floor .It got caught up in the bottom of the spin dryer clutch jamming everything up .before i could switch off the damage was done so now i"m looking for a replacement motor . If anyone has a motor for sale i would be most grateful.so its back in the garage for the time being

Is a stretch one and not a rigid V belt.

If you have no luck finding a spin motor I have a spare. Let me know

Apologies I seemed to have missed this thread and Welcome to the Supermatic club, great washers and between us with spares you should have no problem having a working machine.

The great thing is they are certainly worth the graft to renovate and the satisfaction of having repaired it yourself. Did you repair many of these in your time as an engineer ?

well after a few mishaps it working well .The wash pump pulley broke in half so knowing i wouldn't be able to get a replacement i made a new one out of an Ikea cabinet leg and after three loads its still working as it should [its probably stronger than the original]. I did work on a lot of these twintubs as well as the Hoover and frigidaire models that were around at the time .It was so easy back then .just replace parts when needed but as you probably know its not so easy these days. I think i prefer the older hotpoint twintubs to this model purely for the build quality same goes for Hoover .Too much plastic for my liking

Well

guys . I finished this machine and with its new spin motor and bodged up wash pump its running perfectly .So time moves on and i start a new project [hotpoint Empress] meanwhile the busted pulley from the supermatic wash pump is on the windowsill in the kitchen [or it was ] I had completely forgotten about it till this morning when my partner said to me oh here's that pully you wanted .A new [printed ]pully only this one is much more substantial than the old one .Just thought you would like to see it. I have to say i take back everything i said about too much plastic .We may not be able to get parts for these old machines but at least with these fantastic new inventions we have the option to print new ones [within reason ]

Morning Anthony and WOW now thats a great job done, I think your printer person will be getting lots of requests, the applications are endless for the hobby we have.

Was the original more of a hard bakelite ? It looks it ? wonder if the new plastic version will be longer lasting etc
