Hello all!

So, my partner and I are moving in together at the end of November, and we have decided to start fresh and buy new kitchen appliances. Mainly a new fridge, dishwasher and washing machine.

I have been researching and pricing, and we have a few nice scratch and dent outlets here in Cape Town, and the search has been narrowed down to:

A Bosch 8kg Serie 4 washing machine and matching condensor dryer

OR

A Grundig 9kg/6kg washer dryer combo.

It will cost us ZAR 2000 LESS to buy the Grundig combo than to buy the Bosch set. This is based on getting them at the scratch and dent shops.

from the research I have done (online, speaking to store reps) it seems that the Grundig combo is the best combo on the market at the moment. It also seems to be a better washing machine than the Bosch 8kg Serie 4 (and much bigger drum from when I looked at the 2).

However, I have had bad experience with combos in the past (5+ years ago) where they left clothes very creased, and still damp even when cupboard dry was selected.

I think I'm starting to like the idea of the Grundig, and especially having a 9kg front loader.

Not too worried about the long wash and dry times, as most of the time I put washing on and go out or go to bed. And with it being South Africa, we wont be drying everything in the machine. Mainly just underwear and socks and towels in the summer and maybe more things in winter. I have a spinner that I use all the time so I would still 1st run things through the spinner before putting them in to the machine for a dry cycle, and because Cape Town is windy, putting clothes in the spinner, and hanging them on the clothes horse by an open window over night, gets them dry by morning. So not worried about the time factor.

Just want to know: is Grundig a better buy than a Bosch? And would a Grundig combo be a good gamble for a combo? (as much as we would love to, we cant afford a Miele)

I have my heart set on a Grundig dishwasher and fridge. I have never heard such a quiet fridge in my life!

My father tends to buy Grundig when it comes to washers and dryers, they usually last a few years. My father doesn't really know how to do laundry though, so in your case.. It might last a lot longer lol. I've used it once (when I was visiting and just had hand luggage on the plane) It came out clean and the dryer got it completely dry
 
I vote for the Grundig and then you can report to all about your experiences with it. (Actually I have never even heard of a Grundig washer/dryer) I have know people who were very unhappy with their Bosch washer and dryer. After looking at the links on here, Grundig looks like really premium appliances to me. I bet they are wonderful.
 
Thanks guys! I think I am leaning more toward the Grundig. I want to see if it really is as good as it claims to be, and I like the idea of having such a big machine (currently have a 7kg LG direct drive)

@foraloysius I am very familiar with Defy. They have been in SA for more than 100 years and have a reputation for being incredibly reliable. I know that they are the Grundig importers and also do their servicing. Which is good to know that if something should go wrong with the machine, it will be quick and (hopefully) cheaper to fix than a Bosch.

Thanks, but that really doesn't tell me anything. I'm just an ignorant hillbilly from oklahoma. They look and sound like quality appliances though.
 
Well Bruce, I could give you my opinion on these appliances, but that wouldn't help much either I suppose. What counts is that Matthew now knows more about the appliances he wants to purchase.

Let me just say I would prefer Bosch over Grundig, but that's me. Grundig is indeed cheaper than Bosch, which is worth considering when you want to buy something.
 
You are right about that! Price does make a difference. I'm sure Bosch is a good appliance. I have had one dishwasher by Bosch and it did a really good job.
 
Grundig...

To me also means Audio/Stereos.

But what happens now is the name is sold to other manufacturers for use.

To be honest (note: to me only) these days, the name badge on a product means nothing. As I nearly always find that they’re all made by a handful of manufacturers.

Eg, I have a TV “made by” Wharfedale.

Wharfedale here in the U.K. have always been the last word in stereo speakers (the best of the best). So would assume, anything with their name on will be amazing quality.

The TV I have is acceptable, and has lasted a reasonably long time, but it is certainly nothing to write home about, and oddly, the sound isn’t great (to be fair most flatscreens don’t have the best sound) have to use a sound bar.

But of course my TV isn’t made by Wharfedale at all, the name is used under licence.

Was a high end German stereo and radio here in the states sold in the 60s mostly, I didn't know they ever made anything else.
 
Water restrictions?!

just keep in mind that a washer dryer combo usually uses water to cool down the drum and or condensor unit, and you know that in Cape Town and the rest of the country we have huge water restrictions and water problems, so just make sure the machine does not use water in the drying cycle.

I also agree with Foraloysius, and would also side with the Bosch appliances I don't think that the Grundigs are as top quality as they would suggest, its more of a rebranding game I suppose. Like dressing up a pig, its still a pig.
 
Water Restrictions...

I am very well aware of the water restrictios, and thats why I am leaning toward this Grundig combo, as it uses air to cool the condensor (as can be seem by clicking on the link in the beginning of this thread)

And as much as I know Bosch is a good quality machine, we are just worried that the repair costs will be higher than if something happened to the Grundig. Grundig is imported and serviced by Defy, so repair costs should be lower than a Bosch. Also, the Grundig has a 5 year warranty, and Bosch only 3 years. So this also gives me peace of mind.

After seeing these in the flesh, I can say they seem very well built and quite solid, and claim to be highly efficient, so I am actually quite keen to try them out. Just wanted to find out if anyone has any experience with them
