Hi everyone. I found an ad here for a free 'old' Philco Refrigerator, with no picture or notation of age. I wrote the seller to ask for a picture. Meanwhile, I was wondering if anyone knew how long Philco made refrigerators, so I could at least ballpark it. It would be a dream come true if it was a Philco "V" handle. I guess we'll see! Thanks!

Philco---

brand refrigerators were available here in the States up until 1973-'75. I remember one last print campaign featuring their new "energy saving" line......

Yep, that's about right. I had an uncle who was a Philco salesman. I think they had some trouble in the early Seventies fridges with an interior lining that was supposed to absorb odors, but the big issue was that Ford just wanted to get out of the appliance business.

1975?

I'm surprised... The latest ad I could find was '67. Still waiting on that fridge.... My luck it will be a 70s model (doesn't quite work in my 50's kitchen!)

1974 Philco Ford Fridge

Back in Illinois, in the small town I grew up in, we had an appliance store that sold more Philcos than any other in the state. My parents were on their second Philco Air Conditioner when the motor froze in 1975, they replaced with a Philco Texan 18000 BTU, it had louvers that swept the air from side to side. Ok back to fridges....we had a 1974 Philco Ford Top Mount Harvest Gold with Ice Maker. Never a problem. On my block out of 10 houses 8 had Philco fridges. And at that time, new construction did not come with appliances. Also a note with our house, 3 in a row had the Philco texan air conditioner. I could remember wishing we had a GE Superthrust, because I thought they were cool looking.

Another man's trash...

There is a recycler in a suburb of St. Paul that has/had one of those V handle Philco refrigerators. It has a small dent in the bottom of the door - still wanted like $800.00 for it. He also had a nice Crosley refrigerator with the water dispensor on the door. I got my 55 Shelvador from him - that was nearly 3 years ago.

When I moved here in 1986, coworkers here that moved with me bought, what I thought was a cool looking 70s house complete with shag carpeting and private 8 person jacuzzi. I wished I could have afforded this 4 bedroom house. the kitchen had a KDI18 dishwasher, a high/lo double oven Hotpoint range, and a Philco fridge--all avocado green!!! I think those appliances can give you the date of the house.
